Is Tony Todd in Candyman 2021

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Candyman, now playing in theaters.

The trailers for Nia DaCosta’s Candyman feature shots of the titular spirit of the Candyman, though this one is played not by Tony Todd, but instead by Michael Hargrove, a Chicago-based theater actor. This has caused people to wonder if Todd will actually appear in the film at all since he hasn’t really been included in the marketing materials. After all, Todd was the one who made the role famous with his iconic performance in the original film in 1992. However, there’s no need to be concerned; Todd actually does return as the Candyman, but not necessarily in the way people may have expected.

The new Candyman film expands the mythology of the titular spirit and explains that Todd’s Daniel Robitaille is not the only Candyman, simply the first. The legend of the Candyman functions just like other urban legends, where the general idea stays the same, but the details vary from story to story. In this case, the details that stay the same include the iconic coat, the presence of bees and a hook for a hand, but the real man behind the spirit is actually many different men. In this way, Candyman acts as a sort of title and Robitaille was the first, but not the last.

The main connection between these different men is they all suffered brutal deaths that were racially motivated. Robitaille was murdered for falling in love with a white woman. He was chased by a mob, tortured, his hand was cut off, he was covered in honeycomb and stung by bees until he died. The main version of Candyman in the new film is actually a man named Sherman Fields. When he is introduced, the man telling his story, William Burke, explains that Fields is Candyman “to him” because, though many use that name, his personal default is the one with whom he has a personal connection.

Fields was a resident of the Cabrini-Green housing project in the 1970s who was known in the community for handing out candy to the local children. He was wrongfully accused of lacing this candy with razor blades in an attempt to harm the children. When the white police officers found him, they beat him to death with no regard for his innocence. They beat him so brutally that his face was unrecognizable at the time of his death. It is this incarnation of Candyman that haunts protagonist Anthony as he makes his own transformation into a new version of the Candyman for the modern, gentrified Cabrini community.

Anthony’s journey to becoming a new version of Candyman is orchestrated by William Burke. Burke pushes him through his transformation, but what ultimately completes the process is that while brutally injured and unable to stand or defend himself, Anthony is shot and killed by the police unprovoked. Then Brianna, Anthony’s girlfriend, is arrested by the same police who killed her boyfriend and threatened by them to comply with their fictitious version of the events that led to Anthony’s death. Brianna says Candyman five times into her reflection in the rearview mirror and Anthony returns as the Candyman to butcher the police and free Brianna.

When Brianna escapes, she witnesses Anthony transform into Daniel Robitaille, which is when Todd makes his cameo in the film. Robitaille emerges from a face full of bees to tell Brianna to spread the word to everyone about Candyman. This is how 2021’s Candyman ends, with the iconic voice and image of Tony Todd as the Candyman once again.
