It was previously reported that Marvel Studios’ upcoming Eternals will be one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s longest films. Director Chloé Zhao confirmed that fact in a recent interview.

Speaking to Fandango, Zhao acknowledged that the reported 156 minute runtime is correct and explained, “It could be longer!” She added, “You know, it’s ten characters, the Celestials and 7,000 years. There’s a lot going on.” It’s worth noting that Disney previously announced that Eternals will see two storylines unfold across the present day and distant past.

As Zhao described elsewhere during the interview, Eternals follows the titular ancient heroes. “We like to call them Earth’s original superheroes,” the director said. “So, they were instructed to stand on the sideline once the Deviants were gone to allow humans to develop and progress in the way that we were meant to…and that ultimately led us to someone like Tony [Stark]. So, they’ve always existed in the shadows…you just never know where they might show up again.”

In the comics, Eternals were created by the Celestials to combat the Deviants– a race of mutated proto-humans, also created by the Celestials. These Deviants were often too mutated and no longer resembled humans, inspiring myth and folklore. In order to prevent the wild Deviants from wreaking havoc across the world, the Eternals were created.

The Deviants have appeared in Eternals’ various trailers and promo clips, resembling monsters and alien beasts more than anything else. For audiences wondering where the Eternals have been and what the in-universe reason might be for their absence during the “Infinity Saga”, Zhao previously explained, “[The audience] will understand why… Not only why, but how complicated not interfering made them feel. We explore that. You’ll see that in the film. The Eternals were instructed not to interfere with any human conflict unless Deviants are involved. There’s a reason why that’s the case. And that was the instruction from the prime Celestial Arishem.”

Many of the film’s stars, in their vague descriptions of the film and their characters, have suggested that Zhao’s goal with the film was to tell human stories. Marvel executive producer Nate Moore said, “We want them to discover a mythology that is a challenging sci-fi movie but also has a human heart. And we want them to meet ten heroes who they hopefully can relate to.” Moreover, actor Haaz Sleiman stated that the film humanizes LGBTQ+ relationships as well. He said, “I feel like Marvel, they were very smart to cast me in it because I got to humanize the hell out of it. I got to humanize an LGBTQ+ family and show how beautiful they are.”
