SpiderMan 4 Is Perfect for Returning Michael Mando’s Scorpion to the MCU

Spider-Man: No Way Home brought together three generations of Spider-Men and turned over a new leaf for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of the wall-crawler. With Sony and Marvel Studios actively developing Spidey’s future within the MCU, fans are speculating as to which villains the hero could face next. However, the perfect MCU Spider-Man villain is already being kept on ice — and it’s high time he made a comeback.

2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spidey’s first MCU solo film, featured Adrian Toomes/Vulture (Michael Keaton) as its main antagonist. That said, the film also introduced another fan-favorite Spider-Man rogue in the form of MacDonald “Mac” Gargan, better known as the Scorpion, played by Michael Mando.

Roughly halfway through Homecoming, Mac Gargan attempts to buy alien tech from Toomes’ crew, only to be thwarted by Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and subsequently arrested. At the end of the film, Toomes and Gargan meet up in prison, with the former denying the fact that he knows Spidey’s secret identity. Nevertheless, the two have a shared goal of seeking revenge on the hero for putting them behind bars, thus planting the seed for future villainous exploits. However, the MCU has yet to actually follow up on this.

2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home pivoted to a new setting, pitting Peter Parker/Spider-Man against Quentin Beck/Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) and his artificially-created Elementals while on a trip to Europe, leaving Toomes and Gargan back in New York City. 2021’s No Way Home returned to the Big Apple, but this time around, Peter had to contend with a host of villains previously faced by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s respective versions of Spider-Man.

Keaton’s Adrian Toomes makes a multiversal comeback in Sony’s new Spider-Man spinoff film Morbius, but Mando’s Mac Gargan has been totally MIA for half a decade at this point — and Sony and Marvel would do well to bring him back into the fold, preferably for their fourth MCU Spider-Man film. Now, he doesn’t have to be the film’s only villain, but he should definitely be involved.

Granted, No Way Home’s post-credits scene seemed to tease a version of Venom as Spidey’s next foe, but that actually works out perfectly. After all, while he is best known as the Scorpion, Mac Gargan did become Venom as part of the Dark Avengers in the original Marvel comic books, which just goes to show that Mando’s character has several films’ worth of potential.

On top of that, Mando himself is easily one of the best actors working today. His stellar portrayal of Ignacio “Nacho” Varga in AMC’s Breaking Bad prequel series Better Call Saul is proof enough of that. He also certainly knows how to play a villain on the caliber of Marvel’s notoriously unhinged Mac Gargan, considering his performance as Vaas Montenegro in the 2012 video game Far Cry 3.

What’s more, while the MCU has made leaps and bounds in terms of representation in recent years, there is still a noticeable lack of major roles played by actors of Latino and/or Hispanic descent. With all that in mind, Sony and Marvel would be making a big mistake if they were to let Mando slip through the cracks. There likely is some sort of plan in place, but it just seems foolish that No Way Home would include a multiversal Scorpion Easter egg when the MCU already has its own version of Scorpion waiting in the wings.
