Squid Game Episode 1 Sneakily Hinted At Gihun Being Player 456

Squid Game episode 1 contains several clues about the fate of protagonist Seong Gi-hun, which includes foreshadowing around his designation as Player 456. The survival drama Squid Game, Netflix’s most popular show, pits 456 players against each other in a series of death games inspired by Korean children’s games. The players are motivated by Squid Game’s ₩ 45.6 billion grand prize, which amounts to around $38 million in the U.S.

Squid Game’s players are all either deeply in debt or desperate for money to pursue their dreams, which is why they all volunteered to join the deadly competition. For this reason, the immensely popular new series has been lauded for highlighting South Korea’s gambling and debt problems, personified by Seong Gi-hun. Many of the competitors appear to have some level of addiction to gambling, but before the games even begin in Squid Game episode 1, Gi-hun is seen stealing money from his mother to bet on horses—and he wins.

When the Squid Game protagonist collects his winnings, the total amounts to ₩45.6 million. This is the first clue that Gi-hun, among the hundreds of players involved in Squid Game, will be assigned 456 as his player number. It’s no coincidence that Gi-hun wins ₩45.6 million won in episode 1, is later designated as Squid Game Player 456, and eventually wins Squid Game’s ₩45.6 billion won grand prize. The symbolism doesn’t end there. While Gi-hun is the last player chosen for the game, the first is Oh Il-nam, aka Player 001, with whom Gi-hun shares a close and fatherly relationship. In the final episode of Squid Game, Il-nam reveals to Gi-hun that he is not just any player, but the billionaire who founded Squid Game. Il-nam admits that he joined the death games for fun, but wasn’t lying about having a brain tumor, succumbing to its effects on his deathbed. However, according to certain clues that Squid Game leaves behind before the final episode, Il-nam wasn’t being completely truthful to Gi-hun, his so-called “gganbu”.

In fact, these clues suggest that old man Il-nam is also Gi-hun’s dad. Apart from how Il-nam and Gi-hun’s respective player numbers represent the first and last players of the game, Il-nam also says that his son is just like Gi-hun. During the marble game, both characters say that the fake neighborhood looks very much like where they lived in the past, and in one scene, the two also wear the number 001 at the same time. Moreover, Il-nam literally hands Gi-hun all the marbles at the end of the game, which symbolizes the Old Man handing control over to Gi-hun.

Indeed, Gi-hun winning ₩45.6 million is just one of the many clues that Squid Game drops for its viewers early into the series. Because of Squid Game’s use of colors, shapes, and numbers to symbolize the show’s characters and elements, the blood-soaked series has become one of the most discussed things in recent memory. And many of these clues have evolved into various theories about how Squid Game season 2 will play out. For now, although the clues point to Gi-hun, aka Player 456, getting involved in Squid Game again, it’s all speculation until the second season drops.
