In a show like The Good Place, all of Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, Jason and Michael’s quotes are hilarious or insightful and philosophical.

While the characters in The Good Place do find themselves in similar places or on comparable journeys, their unique and quirky personalities are in fact very different from one another. Some characters are humans trying to learn to become better people and others are demons trying to find new ways to torture those humans. However, by the end of the series, most of the characters manage to find common ground and learn to be patient with one another.

Some of the conversations between people (and demons and not-robots) on the show are profound and philosophical, some are funny musings about the strangeness of human beings, and others are just hysterical interactions between very different personalities. Nonetheless, all the characters have a quote that stands above the rest.

10 Janet: “It Turns Out The Best Janet Was The Janet That Was Inside Janet All Along.”

Janet is a particularly fascinating character because she is not a human or a demon; she is an informational assistant. She is kind of a robot (although she would dispute this) and therefore should only really be capable of upgrades, not transformative change. However, she somehow manages to acquire opinions and emotions, making Janet’s story arc on The Good Place particularly exciting.

This quote is prior to Janet developing a unique and subjective self and when she says these words, she is essentially just a big sponge for information. In an attempt to work out some kinks in her system, Michael gives her some self-help books. Without being able to digest and interpret the information, she simply absorbs it all and comes out with this funny line, accidentally poking fun at generic self-help guidance in the process.

9 Shawn: “‘Fair’ Is The Stupidest Word Humans Ever Invented, Except For ‘Staycation’.”

Demon and boss in the Bad Place, Shawn, is one of the meanest characters on the show. Shawn thinks humans are brainless and is happy to spend all the Jeremy Bearimys in the universe thinking of ways to torture them.

This quote sums up this character in just a few words — he is villainous to think that ‘fairness’ has no place in the world and he loves to make jokes at humans’ expense (although he may have a point about ‘staycation’ being a ridiculous word) This character’s quote is also very much in line with the way the show tackled the concept of hell and demons.

8 Chidi: “I’m Just Not A New Experience Kind Of Guy. My Comfort Zone Is Basically Like, That Chair, And Honestly? The Arms Are A Little Sharp.”

This fan-favorite character is always stressed but kind, and Chidi’s nerdiness in The Good Place is one of the most watchable things about the show. After spending his life trying to find universal truths about goodness and morality, Chidi is devastated to find out that, because of his indecisiveness, he has wound up in the Bad Place.

This hilarious quote is Chidi’s best because it shows how this character is a big ball of anxiety, routine, and stress. He cares so much about doing to right thing that he is paralyzed by all the different, right choices he has to make in order to get there, and ends up staying firmly in his comfort zone (and even that is a little much). Chidi is relatable because he strives for perfection but suffers from a fear of, well, everything!

7 Jason: “Okay Homies, You’re Sad. I Can Tell ‘Cause You Have The Same Looks On Your Faces That My Teachers Did Whenever I Raised My Hand In Class. But Let’s Be Happy.”

Most of the time, Jason does not know what is really going on. He often provides comic relief in intense situations, and somehow ends up in a relationship (and married) to “not a girl” Janet.

Although this quote is representative of Jason’s funniness, it is his best because it is the perfect example of his thoughtless and naïve, optimistic outlook on life. No matter what is going on, Jason slaps a smile on his face and approaches every situation with enthusiasm. Jason is the anti-Chidi; whereas Chidi’s overthinking of every situation makes him anxious and stressed, Jason’s underthinking of every situation makes him happy and content.

6 Trevor: “But Who Are They Going To Believe… Me Or A Woman?”

This demon really is a demon. He is the demon on the show that really embodies all bad things. The series sees him wreck Tahani’s house, manipulate Eleanor and try to take her to the Bad Place. Everything this character says is politically incorrect or offensive.

While this quote is extremely provocative, that is exactly what the character is. The audience is not intended to like Trevor; they are supposed to think he is abhorrent and his views and behaviors are inexcusable. This quote makes all fans’ blood boil and he really is a character that fans love to hate.

5 Tahani: “It’s Not About Who You Know. Enlightenment Comes From Within. The Dalai Llama Texted Me That.”

Tahani finds herself in the Bad Place because she values attention and approval above all else. While she did some good (or even incredible) things during her time on Earth, she did them in order to be admired and validated, not because she wanted to do good in the world. It was Tahani’s motivations that were wrong.

This is just one of Tahani’s funniest quotes in The Good Place. In this quote, she manages to preach goodness to other people while completely contradicting herself. She knows the right thing but has no interest in doing it unless it leads to praise and getting to stick it to her sister. This is classic Tahani, who for a long time wholeheartedly believes that she is a good person — the best, in fact.

4 Judge Gen: “You Know What I Just Discovered Recently? Podcasts. There’s Like A Billion Of Them And They Just Keep Coming.”

Judge Gen is the all-knowing judge of the afterlife. However, while she has incredible and unparalleled knowledge of the universe, she is not a serious character. Instead, she is very light-hearted and a lot of her lines in the series are about new human things she has discovered, and, just like most fans of The Good Place, she loves to binge TV series and podcasts.

This quote is this character’s best because it demonstrates what an unusual and humorous character Judge Gen really is. She knows everything there is to know about everything and so, one would imagine, she would have very important things to do with her time. Yet, she spends her time listening to people discussing their opinions about things that only matter on Earth. Perhaps unlimited time really is a lot.

3 Eleanor: “Kant Would Say That Lying In Any Scenario Is Wrong. On The Other Hand, Snitches Do Get Stitches.”

Eleanor goes through major changes in The Good Place. The show’s protagonist is absolutely hilarious and kind. She wants to do better and be better.

She says these words at a time of transition when she has already learned a lot about philosophy but is still bogged down by her old, bad habit of taking the easy option out. This is Eleanor’s best quote because it is humorous but it also encapsulates how divided the character is — between studying philosophy and improving herself and staying the same “mediocre” person.

2 Vicky: “I Am A Strong, Independent Acid Snake In The Skinsuit Of A Strong, Independent Woman!”

Vicky is a demon whose job is to torture humans, and she really does take pride in her work. She is always finding a new theatrical way to torture her subjects but making it all about herself in the process. However, fans could not help but like this character — she is so ridiculously and humorously self-centered.

This quote shows what fans felt about this character — that she is capable of good. With a little compassion and assurance from others twinned with a belief in herself, Vicki is capable of using her skills for good rather than evil — despite being an acid snake!

1 Michael: “That’s What Makes It Special. I Won’t Exactly Know What’s Going To Happen After I Die. Nothing More Human Than That. Beside Texting People That You’re Five Minutes Away When You Haven’t Even Left The House.”

Even as a demon, Michael has a fascination with humans and their quirks. He is interested in how humans seem to make illogical decisions and why they like certain things, and he eventually dreams of experiencing humanity first-hand. He knows a lot about the universe and philosophy, and, through Chidi’s tireless efforts, Michael learns to be good.

This quote shows some of Michael’s wisdom about what it means to be human. Fans know this line is so typical of the character they love — combining something deep and philosophical with a funny observation about a human quirk.
