Squid Game Season 2 Plans Revealed By Director

Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk has revealed he isn’t quite ready for season 2 just yet. The South Korean filmmaker has achieved widespread attention since his Netflix survival drama Squid Game was released in mid-September. The show has garnered plenty of attention around the world, and is the first Korean-language show to top the Netflix charts in the United States. Many fans have likened the show to the Japanese manga series Liar’s Game, saying it functions as an effective commentary on modern capitalism.

The nine-episode series follows 456 downtrodden people who are all experiencing financial difficulties in their lives. Each is invited to compete in a mysterious survival competition, based on well-known childhood games. However, the game is complete with deadly twists, and the participants must risk their lives in pursuit of fortune. The winner earns a prize of ₩45.6 billion ($38.6 million). Taking its cues from other survival TV shows and movies, and clearly influenced by seminal Japanese film Battle Royale, Squid Game is a hugely entertaining show with a tight narrative and a strong social commentary. Despite having only been released on September 17, the series has people talking. There are growing hopes that audiences might get to see more of Squid Game in the future with a potential season 2, since viewers long to know more about its world and the characters following the ambiguity of the show’s ending.

However, in an exclusive interview with Variety, Dong-hyuk revealed that he has no plans for a Squid Game sequel yet. Instead, he is focussing on making movies for now, and is currently working on a film draft, tentatively titled “KO Club” (short for “Killing Old Men Club”). Talking about the in-depth process and detail that went into planning the original series, Dong-hyuk explained that he found writing and directing the series quite difficult and stressful, and that “just thinking” about season 2 is “tiring.” Read his full comments below:

“Writing [Squid Game] was harder than normal for me as it was a series, not a film. It took me six months to write and rewrite the first two episodes. … I don’t have well developed plans for ‘Squid Game 2.’ It is quite tiring just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors.”

Hwang Dong-hyuk rose to prominence in his native South Korea with the release of his debut feature film My Father, which was a box office hit. Additionally, he has also written and directed on movies including Silenced, Miss Granny, The Fortress, and Collectors. Western audiences will no doubt be hoping to see more of his work following the success of Squid Game. The filmmaker could even develop a working relationship with Netflix in the future, especially after CEO Ted Sarandos claimed Squid Game could be the biggest Netflix hit ever.

Whilst the director has not ruled out the possibility of a follow-up series, it seems almost certain that this will not be something that’s going to happen any time soon. Moving forward, the Silenced director will look to turn his talents to the big screen. However, there is still hope for fans that in the future they may get to enjoy a Squid Game sequel season on Netflix, possibly with the help of some of Dong-hyuk’s talented colleagues.
