Star Trek TNG Lieutenant Worfs 10 Deadliest Opponents

The character of Worf from Star Trek: The Next Generation bore the honorable distinction of having been the only Klingon to serve in Starfleet, which was a marked departure from his race’s militaristic culture. Despite being raised by two human parents in a world not his own, Worf was well versed in his own culture, particularly when it came to his fighting abilities.

Though considered in peak physical form, and armed with combat and weapon knowledge unparalleled by most, Worf nevertheless faced down a number of foes who were capable of killing him. Some of these enemies had superior strength, while others were conditioned to the rigors of battle, and therefore evenly matched to his own skills.

Q’s Soldiers

In an attempt to woo Riker to accept the powers of the continuum in the season one episode “Hide and Q,” the God-like entity Q decided to put him in a series of positions in order to test his will. The objective was to make Riker believe that he had no alternative but to use the powers to reverse multiple tragedies. One of these involved staging a mock Napoleonic-era battle with beast-like men in French soldier uniforms.

Worf attempted to take them on, but was overwhelmed and stabbed with one of the soldier’s gun bayonets. Next, Wesley Crusher was slain, and Riker used the powers of Q to bring them back, and get them out of danger. Though it was a mock scenario, the consequences for Worf were deadly.

Admiral Gregory Quinn

The Federation was almost overthrown in one of Star Trek: TNG’s most frightening episodes when a parasitic lifeform managed to take control of the bodies of key government and Starfleet personnel. One of these individuals was Picard’s old friend, Admiral Quinn. With their endgame plan in effect, Quinn was dispatched to the Enterprise in order to secure Commander Riker as a host.

After knocking both Riker and La Forge unconscious, Worf stumbled upon the scene. The two engaged in a fight, but Worf was overwhelmed by Quinn’s super strength; a side effect of bonding with the parasite. Had Quinn desired it, he could have broken Worf’s neck like a twig.

Kieran MacDuff

When a mysterious race managed to wipe the memories of the Enterprise crew in the season five episode “Conundrum,” it also inserted one of their operatives onto the ship, disguised as a Starfleet Commander. Kieran MacDuff’s only role was to manipulate the amnesiac crew into believing the Federation was at war with a hostile race.

The crew quickly realized that this presumed foe was technologically inferior, and something wasn’t right. Enraged, MacDuff attempted to assume command and fire on the alien base, but Worf intervened. MacDuff was clearly stronger, and managed to knock Worf halfway across the bridge. Had he and Worf engaged in a prolonged battle, MacDuff would probably have killed him.

Ikat’ika

The war between the Federation and the Dominion was long and bloody. Over the course of the conflict, Worf was taken prisoner by Dominion forces and thrown into a fight pit for the amusement and training of Jem’Hadar soldiers, who were known for their strength and brutality.

In the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “By Inferno’s Light,” one Jem’Hadar soldier Ikat’ika managed to beat Worf almost to the brink of death, but Worf refused to yield. Impressed by his convictions and determination, Ikat’ika soldier yielded instead, much to the disappointment of his Dominion master, who had him promptly executed.

The Borg

Worf has faced down the Borg multiple times and barely lived to tell about it. Although Klingons are known for their physical strength, the Borg are a much greater threat, even to beings like Commander Data. When Jean-Luc Picard was turned into Locutus of Borg in the iconic Borg-related story “The Best of Both Worlds,” he proved a match for Worf, nearly overpowering him.

Later, he’d go up against the Borg again in zero gravity on the underside of the Enterprise-E. After the Borg drones adapted to their phaser fire, Worf went hand-to-hand, killing a Borg drone with a Klingon blade. However, the Borg managed to slice open his pressure suit, forcing him to get creative in order to keep from losing his oxygen.

Roga Danar

When the Enterprise traveled to Angosia III in the third-season episode “The Hunted,” to consider the world’s application for membership within the Federation, they were forced to deal with Roga Danar, a prisoner who escaped a maximum-security prison. Honorable by nature, Danar was a victim of his government’s experimentation, which produced an unstable super-soldier.

In his effort to avoid capture, Danar caused chaos onboard the Enterprise, using misdirection strategies to stay one step ahead of his pursuers. Worf anticipated this tactic and cornered him in a storage bay, where the two fought. Danar’s programming took over, and he nearly killed Worf before escaping.

Gowron

At first glance, Gowron might have seemed like nothing more than a politician, but he was just as deadly in a fight. His leadership of the Klingon High Council was legendary, but over the course of time, he became more impulsive and reckless as a leader, prompting Worf to take action.

The two fought, and Gowron proved to be more than a match for Worf. Eventually, the latter would triumph, ending Gowron’s life, but the battle must have come as a shock for Worf, who was used to seeing Gowron duke it out on the political stage rather than hand-to-hand.

Duras

Duras wasn’t just an enemy to Worf himself, but to the entire house of Mogh. It was Duras’ family who framed Worf’s father for the infamous Khitomer Massacre, claiming that he had colluded with the Romulans and betrayed his own people in the process. In truth, that dishonor fell on Duras’ own father, not Worf’s.

To keep the secret from getting out and sparking a potential civil war, he chose exile from his people, which represented one of Worf’s finest moments on the show. Meanwhile, Duras remained in power. Later, he made the fatal mistake of killing Worf’s mate K’Ehleyr, who tried to access the sealed files regarding Worf’s discommendation. After a fierce battle, Worf gained the upper hand, slaying his enemy once and for all.

Lore

When Data’s twin brother Lore was discovered by the Enterprise in the season one episode “Datalore,” he immediately tried to pass himself off as a benevolent character. However, it quickly became apparent that Lore was a particularly sadistic villain, with no compunctions about killing anyone who got in his way.

After disabling Data, he decided to impersonate him, and effect a plan to sacrifice the lives of the Enterprise crew to the dreaded Crystalline Entity. He managed to trap Worf in a turbo-lift, and the two squared off. Worf hit Lore as hard as he could, but it was completely ineffective. Lore responded by punching Worf right in the sternum, causing him to keel over, before knocking him out with a brutal backhand.

Himself

Of all the foes Worf has faced over the years, none are more dangerous than himself. In the season one episode “Coming of Age,” Wesley Crusher took on a series of tests to determine whether he would be granted admission into Starfleet academy. One of these was dubbed the “Psych Test,” which was determined to root out the deepest fears in every officer.

When Wesley asked Worf for advice regarding the Psych Test, he responded by telling him about his own personal experience. Worf’s greatest fear was relying on others for anything, even his life, which he found difficult. When Wesley asked if he had conquered his fear, Worf quickly replied, “No! It is still my enemy.”
