Star Trek: Picard actress Jeri Ryan has enjoyed playing former Borg drone Seven of Nine on the new CBS All Access series more than she did during her four seasons on Star Trek: Voyager. Ryan reprised the character in the Picard episode “Absolute Candor” and was a recurring presence over the rest of the show’s first season.

Seven of Nine was originally a Borg drone removed from the collective by Captain Janeway and the USS Voyager crew when they were stuck in the Delta Quadrant 75 years away from Earth. Seven’s journey to regaining her humanity broadly defined the back half of Voyager’s seven-year run, and she eventually returned to Earth with the rest of the crew. Star Trek: Picard finds her two decades later having reclaimed much of her humanity, but also having hardened into something of a vigilante, righting perceived wrongs in places the vaunted Federation had mostly left behind.

When asked on Twitter which version of Seven she enjoyed playing more, Voyager’s or Picard’s, Ryan enthusiastically answered the latter.

Picard!

This shouldn’t come as a massive surprise to many fans; Voyager’s later years were a fraught production, with the franchise beginning to lose steam and ratings starting to lag. Ryan was brought in at the start of season 4 in a fairly transparent move to boost the show’s sex appeal, requiring Ryan to wear an uncomfortable skintight catsuit. She also had an infamously chilly relationship with series star Kate Mulgrew, who resented Ryan’s casting and overall focus. Ryan’s talent managed to shine through the producers’ more lascivious intentions. Seven, along with the holographic Doctor, arguably became the heart of the show, embodying the “other” Star Trek character, much like Spock, Lieutenant Commander Data, and Constable Odo before her.

The version of Seven of Nine seen in Star Trek: Picard was mildly controversial, as the horrific death of her ward Icheb hardened her into a cynical vigilante working with the Fenris Rangers, seemingly turning her back on the Federation and Starfleet. Despite that darker turn, Seven became a more intriguing character in Picard, and it’s no surprise Ryan has enjoyed playing this damaged, more human version of the character more than the childlike Seven of her Voyager days.

Star Trek: Picard is far from done with Seven of Nine. Ryan will return for the show’s highly anticipated second season – which should begin filming soon – this time with a new potential love interest in Raffi Musiker, a further evolution of the character. It’s unclear what threat Picard and friends will be facing in season two, but it stands to reason Seven of Nine will be around, and Jeri Ryan will continue to have fun with the new complex role.
