When The Bad Batch hits Disney+ on May 4th, Star Wars TV will be taking its first venture into spin-off television. No Star Wars shows have gotten direct sequels thus far, with The Bad Batch – one of two coming in 2021 alongside The Book Of Boba Fett – directly following up The Clone Wars. With the new series fast approaching, now is the perfect time to look back at some crucial Clone Wars arcs.
The Clone Wars has a lot of quality content to offer across its seven seasons. However, there are a handful of specific arcs that best reflect the characters confirmed or rumored to appear in the show, as well as a lot of the narrative ideas that will pop back up in the new show, and, of course, do justice to the continuing arc of what it is to be a clone in the Galaxy.
10 The Second Battle Of Geonosis Arc
One of The Clone Wars’ longest and best arcs comes near the beginning of the show’s second season, with the second Battle of Geonosis stretching from conflict on the planet all the way through five episodes that lead to zombie clone troopers and an invasive parasite.
The arc is not only a great, fun watch, but given the potential of both Ahsoka and Barriss Offee appearing in The Bad Batch, this story which develops their relationship with each other and the clones may prove to be a crucial rewatch. On top of that, it is one of the best stories with clones relatively at the forefront over the show’s seven seasons.
9 “Heroes On Both Sides”
This two-episode arc does not focus on clones whatsoever. However, it is a story that has flown under the radar over the years in terms of its quality, and it has important messages within it that could fit into The Bad Batch.
With the Galaxy in turmoil as the Republic becomes the Empire, fights will be happening, Separatists cells will still be out there, and early signs of the rebellion in the likes of Saw Guerrera will be forming. What “Heroes on Both Sides” highlights is that Sidious manipulated everyone, not just the Jedi and Republic. There are good Separatists out there, and Clone Force 99 may well encounter some.
8 Boba’s Revenge
Rewatching and enjoying the “Boba’s Revenge” arc in which he infiltrates the clone academy and attempts to get revenge on Mace Windu for his father’s death is not completely dependent on the character’s appearance in the show.
Alongside Fennec Shand, who has already been confirmed, it is safe to assume there will be one or two more bounty hunter cameos, perhaps from the likes of Aurra Sing, or Bossk, or even Cad Bane, whose fate has not been fully realized on screen. This arc highlights some of the camaraderie between clones and the life of bounty hunters, and could reflect some of the side-narrative within The Bad Batch.
7 The Citadel Arc
The Citadel arc is one of the most crucial arcs to rewatch before The Bad Batch, not just for how great it is, but for its importance regarding two characters confirmed to be in the new Disney+ series.
This arc sees a younger Wilhuff Tarkin form a relationship with Anakin Skywalker and show off some of Tarkin’s views on the state of the Galaxy, as well as Anakin’s. It also is the arc in which Echo dies, or so fans thought at least, a heartbreaking scene for fans and characters alike that gives a backstory to his journey towards where he is in this series.
6 “A War On Two Fronts”
Saw Gerrera was confirmed to be a character in the new series in the second trailer, where he dons a new scar and is looking more and more like Forrest Whittaker’s live-action version of the character.
Saw debuted in The Clone Wars episode “A War On Both Sides” alongside his sister Steela, in an arc where the two, alongside a group of others, sought to take back the capital of Onderon from the Separatists. The arc is great for getting to know Saw better and shows a more violent, human side of war that will likely come up again.
5 The Rookies Saga
With three chopped-up episodes in seasons one and three, the Rookies arc is one of the best stories told in The Clone Wars and revolves almost solely around the clones, so it is one of the best stories for delving into the troopers.
Domino Squad, 99, Rex, Cody, and others are explored in this three-part story, which has everything from emotional impact to action to narrative intrigue. This arc would be great to rewatch, not just for the quality and for the fact that there will be some crossover with characters between the two shows, but also because the idea of clone identity is expertly explored, as it surely will be in The Bad Batch.
4 The Umbara Arc
When Star Wars fans debate the greatest ever Clone Wars arc, one that always finds its way to the heart of the conversation is the Umbara arc, a story that, before season seven, was seen by many to be the very best the show had to offer.
The action is outstanding, Pong Krell’s betrayal is one of the best in the show, and the growth of Rex within the arc is incredible. All of the narrative ideas surrounding clones and their place in the Galaxy rarely get explored better than in this arc, and those ideas will likely be taken further in The Bad Batch with the unique Clone Force 99.
3 The Conspiracy Arc
If there is an arc that explores a clone’s place in the Galaxy, though, it is one of the most heartbreaking stories ever told by Star Wars, the season six conspiracy saga in which one of the very best clones meets his end.
This is the arc in which Fives discovers the truth about the clones and their purpose and attempts to relay it to his brothers, managing at least to tell Rex who took the information on board enough to document it, saving his and Ahsoka’s lives later. The inhibitor chips will play a role in The Bad Batch, and this arc where the discovery is made about them and the purpose of the clones in the Galaxy is thrown into disarray is a crucial point in the timeline of that story.
2 The Siege Of Mandalore
The information Fives gives to Rex before he dies ends up saving Ahsoka and Rex in the Siege of Mandalore arc, which is not only The Clone Wars’ best arc but is one of the best stories ever told in Star Wars.
The Bad Batch looks like it will be picking up directly where this arc, the final arc of The Clone Wars, leaves off. Order 66 has been given, the Galactic Empire is forming, and the Jedi Order is gone. This arc lets fans know what happens to Rex during Order 66, as well as Ahsoka, and is so emotionally devastating for fans of clone troopers.
1 The Bad Batch Arc
If there is one arc to rewatch before The Bad Batch, then it would make sense for it to be the Bad Batch arc of The Clone Wars itself. This is the arc that kicks off season seven and is perhaps underrated due to the brilliance of the Siege of Mandalore.
Not only does this arc introduce us to Hunter, Wrecker, Crosshair, and Tech, but it brings Echo back into the fold, with the former member of Domino Squad joining Clone Force 99 at the end of it rather than rejoining Rex. This arc touches on everything likely to be explored in The Bad Batch, from the relationship between Echo and Rex to the uniqueness of Clone Force 99.
