Star Wars: 10 Ways Captain Rex Got Better & Better
Captain Rex seemed like your average clone trooper when he was first introduced. But he changed a lot over the years.

For seven seasons, The Clone Wars built itself as one of the best pieces of content in the forty-plus year history of the Star Wars franchise, with so many expertly crafted stories and a collection of outstanding characters. Between the movie and the TV show, one of the very best of those characters is the co-main character of the show, Captain Rex.
Before The Clone Wars, the clones were nothing more than clones, now thanks to this show and other pieces of content like Rebels, they are so much more, Rex included, and throughout his time in the franchise, Rex gets better and better in so many ways.

This is something true of all clones, but there is no doubt that some clones are much better equipped in certain areas than others, of which Rex is a perfect example.
His skill as a leader is explored more than any other clone and is excellent to watch. He is both a loyal and crucial warrior in battle at the side of his Jedi General. Whether it be situations requiring survival, leadership, improvisation, or combat, Rex is perfect for it.

All clones start off the very same and eventually rise through the ranks from shinies to Arc Troopers, Captains, Commanders, and other ranks.
Rex eventually rises to Captain and Advanced Recon Commando and is second in command to Anakin and Ahsoka. Briefly, for the Siege of Mandalore, he gets promoted to Commander even, but as he says when he gets demoted by Jesse, he prefers being Captain. Later, he rises through the ranks of the Rebel Alliance, from Captain once more, to Commander.
8 Friendship With Anakin & Ahsoka
Friendships and relationships are such a crucial part of Star Wars, from both a narrative and thematic standpoint, as they massively change characters and their dynamics. Two of the best friendships in The Clone Wars are between the trio of Rex, Ahsoka, and Anakin.
Anakin and Rex’s professional relationship has deep personal care, shown in Anakin trusting Rex about him and Padmé; there is a respect and love there. Rex and Ahsoka are the two main characters of the show, and they take a journey together, ending the show with each other, improving both their stories and lives.
7 Brotherhood With Clones
Another essential friendship/relationship in the show is the comradery amongst the clones in the various battalions and the general brotherhood of the Kamino-born heroes.
Rex has many brothers and addresses them as such, with various relationships helping along his journey of individuality and purpose such as Fives, Echo, Hardcase, Jesse, Cody, Wolffe, Gregor, Cut Lawquane, and others.
6 Individuality
Speaking of individuality, that is the primary journey Rex goes on as a character throughout The Clone Wars, as well as all the other clones.
Before the Umbara arc, Rex suffered a lot with his individuality, always following orders no matter what, always putting duty first. From the Umbara arc onwards, Rex’s individuality and purpose grows and comes into question, and he realizes that duty and orders are not always the best courses of action.
5 Seeing & Inspiring Individuality In His Brothers
It is not just his own individuality and purpose that Rex explores and delves into; it is that of his brothers as mentioned above and other clones.
Rex leads his brothers, in the Umbara arc and others, letting them know they are far more than just numbers; they are people, individuals, with a purpose beyond only duty. His encouraging Echo to join the Bad Batch, and somewhat belief in Fives exemplify this more.
4 Somewhat Believing Fives
Speaking of Rex’s belief in Fives, fans were unsure of Rex’s opinion on the conspiracy Fives uncovered and the little information told to him and Anakin directly before he got killed by Commander Fox.
In “Shattered” however, before Order 66 takes over his mind, Rex urges Ahsoka to find Fives, leading her to a holorecording where Rex details what happened with Fives, and how he knows something was going on with him and these chips had something to do with it.
3 Getting His Chip Removed
Speaking of the inhibitor chips, the source of the clone’s obedience to Order 66, Rebels revealed Rex, Gregor, and Wolffe got theirs removed somehow.
In the final season of The Clone Wars, fans see Ahsoka remove Rex’s after he has already succumbed to the order. This pretty much saves Rex’s life and retains his individuality going forward in a new Galaxy.
2 Meeting Up With Gregor & Wolffe
What did not get revealed in season seven of the show, though, was how the aforementioned Gregor and Wolffe got their inhibitor chips removed.
Nevertheless, following the events of the Clone War, Rex being back with two of his brothers, living his life peacefully for a time, without war, is good to see, Rex earns that happiness.
1 Joining The Rebellion
At the same time, though, Rex is not only an incredibly valuable warrior and military mind, but he has a moral compass and a very high sense of right and wrong, knowing how evil the Empire is.
So, when he gets convinced by the Ghost crew and Ahsoka to join the rebellion, it gives him back a bigger purpose in a war where his individuality is not brought into question, but rather his freedom as a person in the Galaxy.
