Star Wars 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Side Characters of The Sequel Trilogy

One of the great things about Star Wars is the large number of characters there are for audiences to either love or hate, so which ones are best and which are the worst?

Star Wars has had some great side characters across the Skywalker Saga, and the most recent sequel trilogy added to a plethora of fan-favorites that will live on with the legacy of the franchise but also gave us some characters we’d rather never see again and definitely could have lived without.

From Maz Kanata to Zorii Bliss, each character has their perks and their issues, and some were probably just better off not being introduced to the Star Wars universe in the first place. Here are the 5 best, and 5 worst, characters of the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

10 Best: Babu Frik

Star Wars 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Side Characters of The Sequel Trilogy

The Star Wars universe is home to many loveable side characters, but none have been as unexpectedly fun as the black market droidsmith Babu Frik. He stole audiences’ hearts the second he appeared on the screen in The Rise of Skywalker attempting to wipe C3P0’s memory bank. His adorable mannerisms when Rey and the squad meet him make you instantly want to protect him and his loud cheering at all the wrong moments is hilarious. He was so memorable it would have been nice to see him as part of the other movies as well.

9 Worst: DJ

Star Wars 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Side Characters of The Sequel Trilogy

Benecio Del Toro’s DJ appeared in The Last Jedi as a codebreaker with a constant stutter who was meant to help Rose and Finn infiltrate a First Order ship so that they can save their friends. Instead, he betrayed them at the last minute and ended up working for the First Order all along. DJ did next to nothing helpful for the whole film, spent most of the time trying to steal things from other people, and he was pretty forgetful, annoying and useless in a movie where so many things happened at the same time.

8 Best: Paige Tico

Star Wars 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Side Characters of The Sequel Trilogy

Paige Tico, Rose Tico’s sister, made quite the impression in the opening of The Last Jedi when she sacrifices herself to blow up two First Order ships. She’s a great start to the film and her sacrifice ultimately ends up being the motivation for her sister Rose to become a bigger part in the fight against the First Order with Finn. Even though she has only a short time on screen, Paige is a great character and is the reason Rose Tico ends up having such great character development throughout The Last Jedi.

7 Worst: Maz Kanata

Star Wars 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Side Characters of The Sequel Trilogy

Maz Kanata was one of the most disappointing side characters of the sequels. In The Force Awakens, she is built up as a bridge of answers in the time between the Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, but pretty much disappears after Rey, Finn and Han Solo visit her on Takodana.

She briefly returns in The Last Jedi in hologram form and is part of the last pieces of the Resistance in The Rise of Skywalker, but never reveals any of the things she claimed to know in the previous movies.

6 Best: General Hux

Star Wars 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Side Characters of The Sequel Trilogy

Despite being an evil character, General Hux has some of the funniest scenes of the sequel trilogy, partly because of his power shifting rivalry with Supreme Leader Kylo Ren and that he continually talks back to him. Hux’s hatred and frustration with Kylo Ren reaches a tipping point when it’s revealed that he’s a spy within the First Order in The Rise of Skywalker. Even though Hux has done plenty of terrible things this change of fate is exactly the kind of development that Hux deserves, which is what makes him one of the best side characters of the franchise.

5 Worst: Beaumont Kin

Star Wars 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Side Characters of The Sequel Trilogy

Dominic Monaghan’s character Beaumont Kin is a member of the resistance who only appears in a few scenes with Rose Tico at the resistance base. But, his character doesn’t leave a lasting impression, and he comes along out of nowhere. There’s a sense that JJ Abrams tried to push Kin’s presence into the Resistance base, but because the audience has no clue where he came from, it doesn’t really land well. In addition to the fact, there are already so many new characters introduced in The Rise of Skywalker; there just wasn’t enough time for the audience to get to know him.

4 Best: Zorii Bliss

Star Wars 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Side Characters of The Sequel Trilogy

Zorii Bliss’s history with Poe Dameron is what makes her character work so well as part of the franchise. A rogue friend of Poe’s from Kijimi, Zorri Bliss is an instant fit for the franchises band of characters, and her willingness to help Poe, Rey and Finn even though she has a way to get away from the First Order for good is really admirable. Her return with Babu Frik towards the end of the Rise of Skywalker is great, her helmet is awesome and her fierce personality is a hit.

3 Worst: The Caretakers

Star Wars 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Side Characters of The Sequel Trilogy

The Caretakers are strange-looking creatures who live on Ach-To, the island where Luke Skywalker spent the latter part of his life as a recluse.

They don’t have much of a presence, but there are times when their being there is just annoying, and all they seem to do is complain about Rey’s presence on the island, or clean, or get angry when Rey accidentally tries to shoot Kylo through the Force bond. Thankfully, they don’t make a reappearance when Rey returns to Ach-To in The Rise of Skywalker.

2 Best: Admiral Holdo

Star Wars 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Side Characters of The Sequel Trilogy

Laura Dern’s General Holdo is one of the best things about The Last Jedi. Her dynamic with Leia is sweet and her rivalry with Poe makes the audience question where her loyalties lie. However, in the end, she becomes the hero of the day and gets everyone off of the ship and sacrifices herself so that she can destroy the First Order’s fleet. That one scene in The Last Jedi is enough to make her one of the best side characters of the Star Wars sequel trilogy and maybe even the entire franchise.

1 Worst: Captain Phasma

Captain Phasma isn’t necessarily a bad character, but she is a horrible person. In The Force Awakens, she’s introduced as Finn’s superior before he escapes with Poe to Jakku. In The Last Jedi, she has an epic final battle with Finn, who at this point she regards as a traitor to the First Order for abandoning his post as a stormtrooper, and ultimately she falls into the burning wreckage below her, so she got what she deserved! However, some could say that her character’s potential was wasted and she could have done more for the First Order.
