Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn has made a name for himself all around the world as a versatile and talented actor since a young age. He has worked expansively in Australian, British, and American cinema, and starred in major franchises, playing prominent characters in both Star Wars and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Despite his versatility, there is one type of role that he is especially known for – the villain. Mendelsohn seems to thrive playing the antagonist, chilling viewers to the bone with his menacing expressions and his ability to truly immerse himself in to these darker roles. It doesn’t matter if his character is a low level, petty criminal, or a power hungry fascist hell-bent on genocide, Mendelsohn has a definitive knack for playing the bad guy.
10 Vince Kovac – Tangle (2009)
A lead role in an Australian drama, Vince Kovac is the patriarch of the Kovac family and a real piece of work. A man that masquerades as a good husband and loving father, Vince doesn’t try to hide his casual racism and misogyny when away from his family. He has multiple affairs throughout the series, cheating on his wife like it’s a fun game that he’s learned how to play.
Season two reveals that Vince has a secret daughter from a long-term affair that only lives a few minutes away from his home. Oozing with toxic masculinity and bullying those around him that he views as lesser, Vince may not be a traditional villain with murderous intent, but he sure is the villain of this primetime drama.
9 Danny Rayburn – Bloodline (2015-2017)
Seen by many as the villain, or at least primary antagonist of the series, the truth is that Danny has been a victim for years. Childhood trauma from witnessing his sister’s death, combined with physical and emotional abuse from his family is no doubt what sent him down his own destructive path of drug use and petty crime.
Danny has done a lot of bad in his life, but he’s not a truly evil human being. He gets by how he needs to get by. He is manipulative, he is unpredictable, and he regularly breaks the law, but he is also a terrible victim who regularly cries out for help and doesn’t get it from the family who caused all of the damage. It’s no wonder that the only people he felt he could turn to were bad friends.
8 Ray – Una (2016)
An uncomfortable but incredibly acted film that broaches on distressing subject matter that many filmmakers avoid, Una truly pushes boundaries, and begs morals questions on if people guilty of certain crimes can ever change.
Mendelsohn stars alongside Rooney Mara, playing Ray, a man who had a twisted “relationship” with his neighbor’s 13 year old daughter over a decade ago. The movie purposely paints a tragic picture of a young woman attempting to reconcile her childhood trauma with the person that she thought she loved as a child, and a man who served his time in prison and is attempting to move on from his mistakes.
7 Daggett – The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
More of a corporate evil than some of the others on the list, John Daggett is fueled by greed and little else. He avoids personally doing dirty work, but doesn’t mind if others do it for him. A millionaire businessman who wants nothing more than to increase his already massive wealth, he employs both Bane and Selina Kyle to help him in his attempts to take over Wayne Enterprises.
His pride and his relentless greed are his ultimate downfall, when he assumes that he is in control of the situation. When Daggett boldly challenges the man who has his own grand plans for Gotham, Bane swiftly breaks his neck.
6 Elias – Trespass (2011)
Directed by Joel Schumacher, this home invasion thriller stars Nicolas Cage, Nicole Kidman, Ben Mendelsohn, and Cam Gigandet. Ben Mendelsohn stars as the ruthless Elias, one of two brothers who attempt to rob a big-time diamond dealer.
Elias is aggressive and more than willing to use violence and fear to get what he wants. Throughout the film, he acts as a bully, defiant, and seems to enjoy terrifying the Miller family, especially Sarah, played by Nicole Kidman.
5 Killian – Spies In Disguise (2019)
Blue Sky Studios’ 2019 animated film, Spies In Disguise, may look like a simple children’s movie about spies turning into pigeons, but it is actually a fantastic commentary on how violence begets violence. Certainly case when it comes to the fierce rivalry between Killian and the movie’s hero, special agent Lance Sterling.
After Sterling’s agency sets off a bomb that kills many of Killian’s men and leaves the villain scarred for life, he becomes consumed by vengeance. Determined to get rid of the agency that killed his team and left him mutilated, Killian has little regard for human life along the way.
4 Nolan Sorrento – Ready Player One (2018)
Another example of corporate evil, Nolan Sorrento is the money grubbing CEO of Innovative Online Industries (IOI). The second largest company in the Ready Player One world, Nolan is determined to take the company to number one.
Consumed by greed and the need for more, he doesn’t let little things like human life stand in his way. Part of his company allows the use of slave labor made up of people who are in debt to IOI. Sorrento doesn’t bat an eye. He is ready and willing to have teenagers and their families killed if it brings him one step closer to winning James Halliday’s contest and its coveted prize.
3 Andrew “Pope” Cody – Animal Kingdom (2010)
The eldest son of the Australian crime family, Andrew “Pope” Cody is a violent and dangerously unstable felon. His sociopathic tendencies make him feared by those around him, especially when he feels his family is at risk. One of the worst examples of this is when he kills his nephew’s teenage ex-girlfriend to ensure her silence, as the police have been asking questions about the Cody’s criminal activity,
When his nephew is out of the house while his girlfriends comes to visit, Pope takes matters into his own hands and gives her a dose of heroin and then smothers her to death.
2 Sheriff Of Nottingham – Robin Hood (2018)
Regardless of the iteration of the story, the Sheriff of Nottingham goes down in literary history as one of the most evil, and Ben Mendelsohn’s take on the famous character is no different. The Sheriff’s willingness to send his own city into utter ruin in order to expand his power and line his pockets can be described in no other way but villainous.
Taxing his people into starvation and cruelly punishing those who can no longer pay, the Sheriff may fancy himself a powerful leader, but he is nothing more than a murderous bully who takes money from families and food from the mouths of children.
1 Orson Krennic – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
The architectural and managerial mastermind behind the Death Star, Director Orson Krennic rises above the rest by death toll alone. A power-hungry fascist desperately working his way up the ranks in the Empire, he was responsible for the creation of a super weapon that had the ability to commit genocide, decimating entire planets full of people, in order to strike fear into the hearts of those that do not bow to the Empire.
