When it comes to original series, Netflix is far ahead of the curve, mostly because they write completely blank checks and spare no expense, as even their worst shows still look stunning. But as writers, showrunners, and directors seemingly have so much creative freedom with the streaming service, it has led to some of the greatest pieces of television of the 21st century.
Whether the show takes genres to places no other TV show ever has, turns Marvel characters into gritty, ultra-violent epics, or turns something as humdrum as a game of chess into a dramatic masterpiece, these pilots are pure works of art.
10 The Haunting Of Hill House (8.3)
The Shirley Jackson novel has had many adaptations, and it could be the most famous horror novel not written by Steven King, but Netflix’s approach to The Haunting of Hill House could be the very best.
The first episode perfectly captured the tone of the ghost story, setting up the eerie atmosphere and exploring inner family struggles. And Hill House featured a surprisingly thought-provoking look at drug addiction that has never been done so well in a horror driven show before.
9 The Witcher (8.4)
The Witcher came at the perfect time, as not long after Game of Thrones came to an end, the Netflix original filled the medieval-inspired fantasy drama shaped hole in audiences’ lives.
The show might not have reached the quality and behemoth fan base of Game of Thrones (at least not yet,) but it has the potential to reach that point with the following season, especially as it’s one of the Netflix shows that gained popularity despite reviewing poorly.
8 The Queen’s Gambit (8.5)
The Queen’s Gambit has become somewhat of a phenomenon, as the show has become a huge hit through word of mouth, and given its extremely niche subject matter being about chess competitions, it is one of the biggest success stories Netflix has had.
The pilot set a standard that would have been hard to stick to, but the show just got better with each episode, and it’s mostly thanks to Anya Taylor Joy’s performance, one of the actors who broke out on the streaming service.
7 Ozark (8.5)
Though Jason Bateman had been typecast to largely comedic roles, as his breakthrough was in the cult hit series Arrested Development, and has since gone on to star in some hilarious movies, his dramatic turn in Ozark is partially to thank for the show’s success.
Being a crime drama in which a financial advisor and his family get caught up with the cartel, it has almost reached Breaking Bad levels of excitement amongst fans. The pilot episode is full to the brim with exciting moments that there are so many great things you forgot from the first episode.
6 The Get Down (8.5)
From the mind of Baz Luhrmann, who created the postmodern classics Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet, and The Great Gatsby, it’s hardly surprising how extravagant and riddled with parties The Get Down is. The pilot is one of the most expensive TV episodes of the decade, as the budget was closing in on $16 million, and it shows, as the series looks incredible.
However, despite every episode having a great IMDb score along with the pilot, The Get Down has unfortunately been canceled by the streaming platform. But it’s hardly surprising given its pricey production cost.
5 Daredevil (8.5)
As all general audiences knew about the character was what was told to them in the critically ridiculed 2003 movie that was almost like a parody of the superhero, Netflix’s version of Daredevil was like fresh, minty mouth wash.
The show gave fans of the character exactly what they wanted, as the character’s incredible martial arts skills were particularly on show, and Wilson Fisk was actually frightening in the way that he switched between being caring and threatening. Fans still haven’t come to terms with the fact that it was canceled too early.
4 The Punisher (8.6)
After the success of Daredevil, there was a decrease in quality with each consecutive Netflix Marvel series that was released, but The Punisher is the one exception to that. Just as Daredevil does, the Punisher takes the law into his own hands, but in an even more brutal and over-the-top violent fashion.
And that’s exactly why Iron Fist was such a disappointment, as it didn’t deliver on the staggering combat that Daredevil did, which is why The Punisher pilot episode is so beloved, as it delivers on the violence, the dark tone, and much more.
3 House of Cards (8.6)
Though the series may have arguably decreased in quality, House of Cards is what started the whole TV landscape as we know it today. The show was the first-ever Netflix original series and the first streaming series of all time, and it introduced one of the most sinister characters ever, Frank Underwood.
Streaming services might not be at the point where they are now if it wasn’t for the House of Cards pilot being as great as it was. Yes, the move to complete streaming is inevitable, but the incredible pilot is what got the train going.
2 Stranger Things (8.6)
Stranger Things was a perfect storm, and the pilot episode perfectly captured the audiences’ nostalgia of the 1980s. From the synth-heavy theme tune to the movie references to the characters’ get-up to the plot itself, which is completely imitative of bonkers 80s movies, the pilot was the most aesthetically pleasing episode of TV ever.
Though it may have been delayed, Stranger Things is one of the many shows returning in 2021, and the strength of the four seasons is all thanks to the foundation that was laid by the pilot.
1 Narcos (8.9)
When it comes to their original movies, Netflix might not have the best run, but when it comes to their shows, the streaming service is leading the way with many of their series being iconic, and that’s visible through Narcos.
When Pablo Escobar was first introduced in the pilot episode, threatening people he had never met before but seemingly knowing everything about their lives and their families, it was one of the most exciting moments of television. The prospects of where the show could go after that scene were endless, as Escobar’s life was so unbelievable, but the simple threats remained the most intense, and it‘s completely unforgettable.
