Star Wars How Mace Windu Created His Own Form of Lightsaber Combat

Jedi Master Mace Windu was one of the Star Wars prequel trilogy’s finest warriors, having not only mastered his unique form of lightsaber combat but created it as well. The form, known as “Vaapad,” is more than a fighting style, it’s also a state of mind that requires as much mental discipline as it does physical. Mace Windu was the only master of Vaapad in Canon, but in the original timeline, the Expanded Universe (now known as Legends), he was one of four Jedi to consistently use it and the only one to truly master it. Windu’s expertise and creation of Vaapad prove that he is a truly incorruptible Jedi.

The Jedi and Sith are ancient enemies with fundamentally different philosophies, but the founders of the Sith Order in both continuities were former Jedi, and thus there are some shared practices between the two religions. One such similarity: The use of lightsabers and the seven forms of lightsaber combat. Form VII, also known as Juyo, was unique in that its use was frowned upon and at times forbidden by the Jedi Order. Juyo was aggressive, offensive, and fueled by emotional uses of the Force to enhance one’s physical abilities. Unsurprisingly, Juyo was the preferred fighting style of many Sith Lords, including Darth Sidious and Darth Maul. Mace Windu created Vaapad, a variation of Juyo that channels the form’s dark side tendencies instead of succumbing to them.

Legends-era Clone Wars material details Mace Windu’s creation of Vaapad, which fellow Jedi Master Sora Bulq assisted him with. As shown in the Star Wars: Republic comics, Bulq was unable to control his emotions when using Vaapad, leaving him vulnerable to the addictive qualities of the dark side of the Force. Not long after the Clone Wars began, Bulq fell to the dark side and became one of Dooku’s Sith Acolytes. As Mace Windu said, Bulq didn’t master Vaapad, Vaapad mastered him. The Republic comics and the novel Shatterpoint show the only other practitioners of Vaapad, Quinlan Vos and Mace’s former padawan Depa Billaba, falling to the dark side as well, and while their respective corruptions weren’t caused by Vaapad, the form’s use may have been a contributing factor.

Mace Windu’s mastery of Vaapad is emphasized in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, where he defeats the Mandalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett and survives against hordes of Separatist Battle Droids. Windu also fights Darth Sidious on even ground in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. While Star Wars: The Clone Wars repeatedly shows Windu’s skills in Vaapad against Battle Droids (and, at one point, the Nightsister Mother Talzin), Windu’s most astounding feats in combat with it are shown in the Legends-era Clone Wars animated series: Star Wars: Clone Wars “Chapter 12” and “Chapter 13.” During the Battle of Dantooine, Mace Windu decimates most of the CIS’s sizeable force of Super Battle Droids and destroys their gargantuan Seismic Tank single-handedly. For a portion of the battle, Windu fights without his lightsaber, using Vaapad for unarmed combat, destroying droids with his bare hands.

The fact that Mace Windu created both a lightsaber combat form and a mental discipline that brings him so close to the dark side and avoided being corrupted by it proves that he is a truly stalwart Jedi. Though Windu strictly adhered to the restrictive lifestyle of the old Jedi Order, his notion of using one’s emotions against the dark side would have made him an ideal member of the Legends-era New Jedi Order, which sought to control emotions rather than be controlled by them like the Sith or suppress them like the old Jedi Order. While Windu, unfortunately, didn’t live to see it, records of his lightsaber combat form were used by Luke’s students, ensuring his legacy as an incorruptible Jedi and a hero of the Star Wars saga.
