Star Wars Maz Kanata Is Responsible For Leias Bounty Hunter Disguise

Star Wars: Return of the Jedi saw Leia Organa disguised as a bounty hunter in order to rescue Han Solo from his carbonite coffin, and an animated short revealed this disguise was possible thanks to Maz Kanata. The Star Wars universe began in 1977 with the movie now known as Star Wars: A New Hope, which introduced the audience to a galaxy far, far away and the heroes and villains who would lead a big part of the saga. A New Hope was followed by Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, which form what’s collectively known as the “original trilogy”.

Since then, the Star Wars universe has been in constant expansion, not only on the big screen but in other media as well, but there were big changes to all the material outside the Skywalker saga once Lucasfilm was purchased by Disney. The Mouse House decided that everything produced prior to April 2014 (except for The Clone Wars) would be labeled non-canon, thus becoming what’s now known as Star Wars Legends. However, the studio has produced more and more Star Wars content that falls into the official canon, including a series of shorts titled Star Wars Forces of Destiny, through which a question about Leia’s actions in Return of the Jedi was answered, while also giving a bit more relevance to a forgotten character from the sequel trilogy.

Star Wars Forces of Destiny is a collection of two-to-three-minute shorts set across different eras of the Star Wars franchise, and they focus on female characters from previous movies and TV shows. In season 2, the episode titled “Bounty Hunted” took viewers back a few decades to follow young Leia (voiced by Shelby Young), Chewbacca, and R2-D2 as they looked for help to free Han Solo, who had been captured by Jabba the Hutt, who froze him in carbonite. Their journey took them to Ord Mantell, a planet that in the days of the Galactic Republic, housed a base of operations for the Black Sun crime syndicate. There they met with Maz Kanata (voiced by Lupita Nyong’o), who as mysterious as ever, told them that the solution “would present itself”. Right after that, they were attacked by bounty hunter Boushh, with Kanata telling them that was their solution: Leia needed a disguise, and “a bounty hunter was perfect”.

Leia and Chewie shot back, with R2-D2 helping in its own way. As Boushh was about to attack again, he was stunned unconscious by Kanata, which allowed Leia to take his armor and leave. After that, Leia infiltrated Jabba’s Palace dressed as Boussh, and was later able to free Han. “Bounty Hounted” not only explains how Leia got her bounty hunter disguise but it also shows how she and Maz Kanata met, as this was never addressed in the sequel trilogy. Most importantly, it allows the audience to see more of Maz Kanata, who even though was once teased to be an important character in the sequel trilogy, was ultimately left behind in favor of bigger characters like Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, and Kylo Ren.

Of course, Star Wars Legends offered an answer to this that was very different. In it, Leia sought assistance from Prince Xizor of the Black Sun, who in order for Leia to get past Imperial security, gave her the armor of bounty hunter Boushh, while Chewie took on the identity of Wookiee bounty hunter Snoova. While it’s a more elaborate answer, involving more characters and alliances, Star Wars Forces of Destiny did well in changing it and adding Maz Kanata instead, which also adds more to her backstory and relationship with Han Solo and Chewbacca, even if slightly.
