Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Bad Batch episode 16, “Kamino Lost.”

New concept art for Star Wars: The Bad Batch implies that the first iteration of Imperial Royal Guards may have been clone commandos. The Bad Batch, which completed its first season on Disney+ last week, has steadily been fleshing out the interim period between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Each episode depicts different aspects of the Republic’s transition into the Empire, most notably the obsolescence of clone troopers in favor of enlisted “TK” troopers (who would go on to evolve into the stormtroopers seen in the original trilogy).

In-universe, Imperial Vice Admiral Rampart (Noshir Dalal) spearheaded this initiative, dubbing the enterprise “Project War Mantle.” Rampart believed that enlisted troopers were superior to the clones that the Republic employed during the Clone Wars. Despite his distaste for clones, the Vice Admiral continued to use them to train newly enlisted TK troopers. However, The Bad Batch’s season finale reveals that clone commandos had a more significant role to play as well, beyond simply being glorified drill instructors.

Recently released concept art for “Kamino Lost” identifies the clone commandos seen at the end of the episode as “Imperial royal guards.” Although the Emperor himself is nowhere in sight, the artwork implies that these troopers answer directly to Palpatine himself. This is a curious choice given the fact that the iconic red Imperial royal guards that fans are more familiar with already exist at this point in the timeline. The red royal guards accompany Palpatine to the Coruscant opera during the fan-favorite Darth Plagueis monologue in Revenge of the Sith, and also appear throughout the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series. Clone commandos aren’t significantly more dangerous than royal guards either, especially considering that they posed a challenge to Jedi Ezra Bridger (Taylor Grey) in Star Wars: Rebels while clone commandos were easily taken out by the Bad Batch. So why would Palpatine choose to enlist clones to defend his secret installation?

The Bad Batch will likely answer these questions and more in its upcoming second season, which was announced earlier this month. There are still countless mysteries to be addressed, particularly relating to the future of Nala Se and the remaining clone troopers left in the service of the Empire. As the show continues to flesh out the intricacies of Project War Mantle, hopefully it will also address Palpatine’s latest royal guards.
