Star Wars Reveals Tragic Symbolism of Leias Return of the Jedi Armor

Warning: contains major spoilers for Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters: Boushh #1!

The armor that Leia wears in Star Wars Return of the Jedi belonged to Boushh, a bounty hunter. She used it as a disguise to get into Jabba’s palace and save Han Solo. However, the armor has a newly revealed backstory that makes her use of it fitting in a tragic way.

Princess Leia is an iconic Star Wars character. She has some of the most recognizable outfits, from her initial white dress to her Endor outfit. However, in Return of the Jedi, she wears someone else’s outfit. Boushh is a bounty hunter whose first appearance was Leia impersonating him. He is said to be dead at the time, though it isn’t widely known when Leia pretends to be him. Now, Marvel Comics has revealed a secret about Boushh’s Ubese armor.

In Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters: Boushh #1, Boushh and his crew wear similar armor. This comic – which has the creative team of Alyssa Wong, David Baldeón, Israel Silva, and Ariana Maher – presents the armor as a mark of shame for the Ubese bounty hunters. They have all been exiled from their home planet of Uba IV and as a result, their names have been erased. The armor is actually the shameful burden of Ubese who have lost their home forever. This makes it highly tragic that Leia is the next owner of the armor.

Star Wars Reveals Tragic Symbolism of Leias Return of the Jedi Armor

Though she was not exiled, Leia is rendered homeless after Darth Vader uses the Death Star to destroy Alderaan – her home planet. She is unable to ever return home and in subsequent films, she never truly has another home. Leia moves from base to base with the rebellion, fighting against the Empire and the First Order. Like Boushh and his crew, she cannot go home. While her name will never be erased from existence in the galaxy, any records of her birth and existence on Alderaan were likely wiped out during the planet’s annihilation.

Boushh’s history has been told in parts, making this the next major chapter revealed about his life. Leia would eventually obtain Boushh’s armor with the help of Maz Kanata on Ord Mantell, but before now, the armor itself was simply armor. The primary function of armor is protection, though in some cultures (such as with Mandalorians) armor is a symbol of honor. Leia uses the armor primarily to hide her identity. This is possible thanks to the mask and its vocal modulator. This function not only prevents Leia from being recognized, it also prevented Boushh’s identity from being what it was in his early life before his exile.

While Leia wearing Boushh’s armor was initially perceived as a practical measure, the new details about it provide a tragic symbolism about all its wearers thus far. Leia may not be ashamed of who she is or where she came from, but she is a homeless citizen of the galaxy nonetheless. The armor may have been confiscated from her when she was discovered by Jabba, but if it ever pops up again, it wouldn’t be a surprise if it found another wearer who falls under similar criteria as its previous owners. Although it isn’t one of her most iconic looks in Star Wars, Leia’s Return of the Jedi armor has a new layer of significance.
