The nominations for The Game Awards 2021’s Game of the year award include Metroid Dread and It Takes Two, with the full nominations list being revealed ahead of the December 9 awards show. After going digital-only last year, The Game Awards 2021’s in-person event returns to Los Angeles, California’s Microsoft Theater on December 9, but viewers will still be able to watch along online as before.
At The Game Awards 2020, The Last of Us Part II famously swept six categories and won the coveted GOTY award, and the PlayStation exclusive went on to become the most-awarded video game in history during last year’s awards season. Other games like Ghost of Tsushima, Hades, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons also won recognition at host and organizer Geoff Keighley’s previous industry celebration, but the awards themselves have begun to take a backseat to the annual show’s real star: game trailers. Anticipated titles like BioWare’s Mass Effect 4 and Dragon Age 4 made high-profile appearances between the announcements of winners, and this year’s Game Awards nominees will likely bookend similarly major reveals.
Geoff Keighley revealed The Game Awards 2021 nominations in a Tuesday stream, and Deathloop, It Takes Two, Metroid Dread, Psychonauts 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Resident Evil Village are the Game of the Year hopefuls. The list of games was decided by a panel of media outlets, and each release is accordingly among the year’s most critically acclaimed titles to have released in the eligible period. Game of the Year is just one of The Game Awards 2021’s 30 categories, so the full list of nominees can be found below.

Here are the Most Nominated Publishers at #TheGameAwards this year, led by the combined Xbox + Bethesda with 20 nominations, and Sony Interactive Entertainment with 11. pic.twitter.com/FQT4utrCZy
In addition to The Game Awards 2021’s dozens of featured games, viewers will also witness the outcome of an ongoing gaming industry competition by the night’s end. A follow-up Game Awards tweet highlights which publishers are so far leading the field in terms of nominations, and Xbox/Bethesda has so far raked in the greatest number of nominations in the publishers’ first shared awards season since Bethesda’s acquisition, totaling 20. The overall winner of The Game Awards 2021, Sony Interactive Entertainment, trails in second with 11 nominations, followed by EA and Square Enix in a tie for third place. Despite Xbox’s current lead, there’s no telling which publisher will ultimately come out on top in terms of awards won.
Because The Game Awards 2021’s eligibility period includes games released and reviewed between November 21, 2020 and November 19, 2021, some major releases like Battlefield 2042 and Halo Infinite won’t be considered until next year’s show. Accordingly, 2022’s game of the year pool will be a tough crowd to stand out in between those and titles like Elden Ring and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. Judges’ and viewers’ decisions on The Game Awards 2021’s GOTY and Player’s Voice awards will be comparatively easier to make despite the year’s strong nominees.
