Star Wars The 10 Best Master & Apprentice Relationships Ranked

The Star Wars franchise is chock full of great character dynamics that well and truly define the piece of content in which it takes place. Whether it be friendships luke Han Solo and Chewbacca’s or romances like Anakin and Padmé, following the characters and their relationships are one of the biggest joys in being a Star Wars fan.

One type of relationship that is always fascinating is that between master and apprentice in both the Jedi and Sith. We truly have not experienced many of these relationships on a deep level, but there are some that are truly fantastic to watch.

10 Luke Skywalker & Leia Organa

Star Wars The 10 Best Master & Apprentice Relationships Ranked

Arguably it is unfair to put this pair on the list considering duos like Asajj and Dooku, Leia and Rey, and a bunch of untapped Jedi Council duos, but the glimpse we got of Luke and Leia and the potential of them is phenomenal.

One of the highlights of The Rise Of Skywalker is the flashback of Luke and Leia’s training. The story of Leia giving up that life is pretty tragic, and her reasons are so Leia, and there is no doubt when this relationship is explored more with the master/apprentice dynamic, it will be fantastic.

9 Luminara Unduli & Barriss Offee

Star Wars The 10 Best Master & Apprentice Relationships Ranked

An out of left field pick for this list is Luminara Unduli and Barriss Offee, but the relationship is unique to the ones we are used to seeing on a deeper level.

It is the most strictly Jedi business master and apprentice relationship, with the two having evident respect for each other and with Luminara having a strict dedication to the Jedi Council and Jedi Order, and Barriss likewise until she fell.

8 Maul & Savage Opress

Star Wars The 10 Best Master & Apprentice Relationships Ranked

Maul and Savage are the only pairings on this list, outside of arguably Luke and Leia, who are not strict Jedi or Sith. Like Sidious said, there is but one true reality of the Sith, a reality in which Maul and Savage do not fit.

Nevertheless, the two’s relationship is pretty fantastic during their time on the show, with Maul seemingly showing his only a bit of real care ever towards his brother. The two get improved as individuals in The Clone Wars because of their partnership.

7 Qui-Gon Jinn & Obi-Wan Kenobi

Star Wars The 10 Best Master & Apprentice Relationships Ranked

Without the Master & Apprentice book, it is hard to imagine these pairs manage to squeeze into the top ten due to Qui-Gon’s death. But, between their fantastic partnership in The Phantom Menace, and that book, they deserve it.

What was fascinating about this pair is their differing ideologies. While Qui-Gon was more concentrated on Jedi prophecies and the living Force, and not wanting to be on the Jedi Council, Obi-Wan was more in the present and more ingrained in the Order as time went on, despite his attitude when he was a youngling.

6 Darth Sidious & Count Dooku

Star Wars The 10 Best Master & Apprentice Relationships Ranked

Not all of the great master/apprentice relationships are the ones fans root for and support, as evident in Sidious and Dooku, who are fantastic throughout The Clone Wars.

The two puppeteered the war, with Sidious using Dooku for the entire time in pretty tragic fashion, considering Dooku truly believed he had a place in the Empire to come. The relationship, similar to how it is with Maul, truly highlights Sidious’ genius.

5 Darth Sidious & Darth Vader

Star Wars The 10 Best Master & Apprentice Relationships Ranked

Sticking with Sidious, he and Vader’s dynamic is phenomenal as it adds so much to the characters and the canon, especially the tragedy of Anakin.

For a long time, they did not trust each other, and the events of Lords Of The Sith and the variety of Vader comics highlight this. They are immensely powerful but seem to despise each other pretty much.

4 Yoda & Luke Skywalker

Star Wars The 10 Best Master & Apprentice Relationships Ranked

A shoutout also deserves to go out to Obi-Wan and Luke, but Yoda and Luke are the true master and apprentice duo, and the two training is one of the highlights of the original trilogy.

The two in The Last Jedi is a touching and brilliant moment with Yoda imparting more wisdom on Luke, and their relationship truly does encapsulate the passing of knowledge, as well as the idea of teaching never really ending when it comes to the Force.

3 Kanan Jarrus & Ezra Bridger

Star Wars The 10 Best Master & Apprentice Relationships Ranked

Some may argue that Yoda and Luke deserve to be higher than Kanan and Ezra, but Kanan and Ezra have an extremely unique and special bond as master and apprentice.

Since Kanan never progressed passed a Padawan until he was knighted by the Temple Guards, for four seasons, he grew with Ezra, the two learned from each other, with Kanan undergoing his own training while training Ezra who himself was a unique Jedi. The two were family as part of the Ghost crew.

2 Anakin Skywalker & Ahsoka Tano

Star Wars The 10 Best Master & Apprentice Relationships Ranked

It really is a tossup between the top two for which is the best duo, the best master/apprentice relationship in Star Wars, and there is a very valid argument for Anakin and Ahsoka to top it off.

Like Kanan and Ezra, the two grew together, and unlike a lot of Jedi at that time, the two had immense care for one another, and Ahsoka’s leaving the Council was a big attributing factor to Anakin’s mistrust of them. The two are brother and sister who are both very powerful and rub off each other in a powerful way. Some of their best stuff together, such as “Twilight of the Apprentice” and Vader picking up her lightsaber in “Victory and Death” happens after the two, or at least Ahsoka, are no longer Jedi.

1 Obi-Wan Kenobi & Anakin Skywalker

Since the prequels came out, the ultimate master/apprentice duo in Star Wars, and one of the best duos and relationships of the franchise, in general, has been Anakin and Obi-Wan.

The banter between the two, the love, care, and emotion they have for each other kept under Jedi wraps, how good of a team they are, how much they trust each other, all of it is amazing. Every minute they are together is great, whether in the prequels or Clone Wars, and the Battle of the Heroes is that bit more heartbreaking because of it. Obi-Wan’s admission of love for Anakin, calling him his brother, was devastating and beautiful.
