Star Wars Wants Mandalorians To Rival The Jedi & Sith

Star Wars is actually trying to make the Mandalorians as important to the galaxy as the Jedi and the Sith. George Lucas’ Star Wars was partly inspired by the Vietnam War, and the idea of a battle between a well-armed military force and a guerrilla movement. This political perspective has always been visible in Star Wars, but it really came to the fore in Return of the Jedi, with the Ewoks standing in for the guerrilla tactics of the Viet Cong that had proved so effective against the US military machine.

And yet, for all that’s the case, the spiritual dynamic of Star Wars has come to dominate the franchise. This is the “Skywalker saga,” after all, and consequently it has become the story of the battle between the Jedi and the Sith and the quest to bring balance to the Force. Even the sequel trilogy wound up incorporated into this overarching narrative, when Lucasfilm decided to make the resurrected Emperor Palpatine the power behind the throne of the First Order. In Star Wars, the galactic powers are not the Empire and the Republic, the First Order and the Resistance; they are the Sith and the Jedi.

And now, it seems, Lucasfilm is coming to consider the Mandalorians to be the third great power. Screen Rant has a copy of The Art of The Mandalorian, in which Lucasfilm Publishing explain the importance of Mandalorians to the franchise.

“Mandalorians have been a part of Star Wars in one form or another since the very beginning of the now four-decade-old mythology. They have played as integral a role in shaping the history of that galaxy far, far away as the Jedi and Sith, whose conflict between the light and dark sides of the Force has traditionally been at the center of Star Wars storytelling… Ultimately, Mandalore emerged as the third superpower in the Star Wars galaxy, alongside the Jedi and Sith.”

In truth, Lucasfilm is exaggerating a little, because Mandalorians have hardly been at the center of the Star Wars galaxy all these years. This becomes even more notable when fans remember neither Boba Fett nor Jango Fett are Mandalorians, but are actually people who wear Mandalorian armor. In fact, the old Expanded Universe interpreted Mandalore and the Mandalorians in a completely different way to the one eventually taken by George Lucas himself, in a series of popular (now non-canon) novels by celebrated author Karen Traviss. Lucasfilm is quietly trying to rewrite history a little here.

It’s not hard to see why they are doing this, though. The Star Wars franchise is finally beginning to move on from endless battles between Jedi and Sith, with the Mandalorians rising to the foreground at last. But whatever happens – whether Bo-Katan succeeds in uniting the Mandalorians and leading them back to Mandalore – the simple truth is that viewers know they will not be the third great galactic power again. The Star Wars sequel trilogy is set decades after The Mandalorian, and Mandalore is never even mentioned. So Lucasfilm’s attempt to overhype the Mandalorians right now is understandable – but ill-advised, and frankly probably unnecessary.
