Star Wars What Happened To Mandalore The Planet

It seems inevitable that The Mandalorian will bring Din Djarin and Baby Yoda to Mandalore sooner or later – but what happened to the planet that forced all the Mandalorians off-world? The Great Purge, referenced multiple times in the Dinsey+ show, is clearly the biggest reason the race is in hiding, but the woes of Mandalore began long before the Empire’s genocide.

In the era of the Old Republic, Mandalore stood as one of the fiercest political presences in the galaxy. The Mandalorians were a proud warrior race, and their bids for galactic conquest sparked numerous wars with the Jedi and the Republic. Unfortunately, centuries of conflict also took their toll on the planet itself, as so many wars and civil wars left the surface of Mandalore devastated and barren. By the time of the Clone Wars, most of the planet had become inhospitable, forcing the remaining Mandalorians to live in domed cities scattered across the planet.

In the years leading up to the prequel trilogy, Mandalore suffered through yet another civil war which brought the planet’s population to a staggering low. In the wake of such wanton destruction, Duchess Satine Kryze declared the military era of Mandalore over. She pledged a nonviolent future for the planet and its citizens, and any former militants who refused to abide by the new code were exiled to the moon of Concordia. There they formed the splinter faction known as Death Watch.

While Mandalore remained neutral through the Clone Wars, it did not stay free of violence. Repeated attempts by Death Watch to retake control of the planet and reestablish a military regime caused constant strife. The former Sith Lord Maul used the chaos to take control of the planet from the shadows, manipulating various officials and Death Watch itself to serve his will. Maul eventually killed the Duchess as an act of vengeance on Obi-Wan Kenobi (her former lover), plunging the planet into violence once again.

While a Republic mission to liberate Mandalore and capture Maul during the final days of the war proved successful, the planet’s troubles didn’t end. Satine’s sister, Bo-Katan Kryze, served as regent of Mandalore during the early days of the Empire, but her resistance to Imperial authority led to her ousting. Gar Saxon took her place as Imperial Governor of Mandalore, and the planet was subsequently subjugated and exploited for its valuable beskar, technological advancements, and military might.

Allied with defiant Mandalorian clans and members of the Rebel Alliance, Bo-Katan fought back against the Imperial occupation. She reclaimed the Darksaber – the symbol of Mandalore (the Mandalorian leader) – and united the clans in opposition to the Empire. This united front contested Imperial rule through the Galactic Civil War, until attempts at controlling Mandalore were deemed impossible by the Empire. The result was the Great Purge – a genocidal campaign meant to extinguish all rebellion from the Mandalorians and exploit the planet’s remaining resources (namely, beskar).

Forced into hiding, different Mandalorian factions took different approaches to preserve their future. The remnants of Bo-Katan’s resistance maintained the pre-Purge code and began gathering strength in secret to retake the planet. Coverts descending from Death Watch, on the other hand, adopted a stricter Mandalorian code to preserve secrecy, which included a rule against removing their helmets while anyone else could see. By The Mandalorian season 2, the clans seem ready for a reunification under Bo-Katan and a campaign to reclaim their homeworld. But Gideon must be dealt with first, and the Darksaber put back in its rightful hands.
