In a deeply personal statement on social media, David Ayer states he will no longer discuss his Suicide Squad director’s cut publicly. Ahead of its release, the DCEU’s first attempt at bringing the Suicide Squad to the big screen sparked a great deal of excitement among audiences. The colorful, Queen-backed trailers promised a fun adventure with an awesomely terrible cast of characters, and Ayer’s work on movies like Training Day boded well for the project. Instead, Suicide Squad was met with terrible reviews and an indifferent fanbase, as the movie turned out to be a confused mess.

At the time, Ayer stood by Suicide Squad and accepted the criticism. However, following the intense support for Zack Snyder’s Justice League within the past year, Ayer has begun to sing a different tune. The director opened up about the many changes Warner Bros. implemented, from a completely different opening to a lighter tone in the vein of Deadpool. With the Snyder Cut campaign a rousing success, many have turned their attention to a potential Ayer Cut.

However, with James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad just around the corner, Ayer is taking a step back from discussing his director’s cut. On Thursday, the director shared a lengthy statement on social media addressing his feelings regarding Suicide Squad and his version of the film, which he once again defends whole-heartedly. After sharing candid words about his upbringing and how he came to work in film, Ayer turns his attention to Suicide Squad, explaining he “put my life” into it. He writes that his version of the movie “has traditional character arcs, amazing performances, a solid 3rd Act resolution.” However, he’s unlikely to go into further detail, as Ayer concludes his statement by saying, “I will no longer speak publicly on this matter.” His full post can be seen below.

Not long after, Gunn added his own words of support, writing, “All my love and admiration, friend.” In making The Suicide Squad, Gunn has been very supportive of Ayer and his director’s cut of the 2016 film.

All my love and admiration, friend. ❤️🙏

Reviews for The Suicide Squad arrived yesterday, and they’ve been nothing short of overwhelmingly positive. Ayer’s statement appeared to be prompted by the new criticisms of the 2016 Suicide Squad that have been brought out by the praise for Gunn’s film. Despite the support the two directors share, countless comparisons have already been drawn between the two Suicide Squad movies, and this appears to have been the tipping point for Ayer.

Whether his director’s cut of Suicide Squad will ever be released remains to be seen. Ayer no longer wishes to discuss it, so fans shouldn’t expect him to advocate for it publicly anymore. It’s an understandable position to take, as Ayer has had to endure endless criticisms for how Suicide Squad turned out. At this point, he would rather put the experience behind him than continue to hash it out online. Based on the comments underneath his post, he still has a great deal of support from fans. Only time will tell if that can translate to a genuine release, but Ayer himself is done with it.
