Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Stargirl, season 1, episode 1, “Pilot.”

Nearly 10 minutes of footage had to be cut from the pilot episode of DC Universe’s Stargirl in order for it to be broadcast on The CW. This was entirely due to the fact that shows produced for streaming services are typically longer than those shows made for broadcast networks.

When Stargirl’s unique schedule was first announced, it was suspected that the episodes would have to be edited from their original format to be shown on The CW. This was assumed because every live-action series produced for the DC Universe streaming service to date (including Doom Patrol and Swamp Thing) had been full of adult content that could not be aired on prime time broadcast television in the United States. Thankfully, for those who had hoped that Stargirl would remain true to the spirit of the family-friendly Stars and STRIPE comics that inspired it, there was no questionable content to cut and all the edits were made purely to make room for commercials. Indeed, The CW edit of Stargirl was rated PG.

Nevertheless, a lot of material was cut in editing the original pilot episode of Stargirl for The CW. While some of the cuts amounted to a line of dialogue here or a reaction-shot there, most of the edits involved deleting whole scenes that offered a deeper insight into certain characters or hinted at subplots that will pay off later in season 1, such as Courtney’s first meeting with Cindy Burman; the head cheerleader and queen of Blue Valley High School, who is destined to become Stargirl’s arch-enemy. Here is a breakdown of everything that was cut from the DC Universe edit of Stargirl for The CW version.

Starman And Stripesy Share A Moment In The JSA’s Final Battle

The opening battle sequence depicting the final battle of the Justice Society of America remained largely intact in The CW edit of Stargirl. Only a single line of dialogue was cut, as Pat Dugan (in his guise as Starman’s sidekick Stripesy) attempted to free Starman from the ice dagger that impaled him. Starman muttered that the rest of the Justice Society were gone, having been killed off by the Injustice Society. In the CW edit, this line was cut completely and the scene jumped directly to Stripsey looking around the collapsing mansion for a means of escape once he’d pulled the ice shard out of his friend’s stomach.

Courtney and Mary’s Goodbye

The first scene set in the modern day shows Courtney Whitmore packing up the last of her belongings in her bedroom, as she prepares to move from Los Angeles to Blue Valley, Nebraska. She is interrupted in this by Mary Kramer, her best friend and neighbor. In The CW edit of Stargirl, Mary gets a single line before the two hug and promise to visit each other whenever they can. In the original DC Universe broadcast, the girls had a little more dialogue together discussing the move before their farewell hug.

Pat Checks His JSA Classified Files And Secret Map

One scene that was cut entirely from The CW edit of the Stargirl pilot focused on Pat Dugan as he began unpacking his belongings in the basement of his new home. Pat dug through a chest full of papers and photos (including the diary of Rex “Hourman” Tyler) before rifling through several JSA Classified files regarding the supervillains known as The Wizard, Brainwave and Icicle. Pat also looked at a map of the American Midwest, with various notes indicating that Blue Valley was important to the Injustice Society for some reason he had yet to determine. This scene revealed Pat’s real reasons for coming to Blue Valley; a question Courtney raised one scene earlier, when her mother and Pat discussed how they just happened to meet in Blue Valley two years previously, when Barbara Whitmore was trying to sell her mother’s house after her death.

Pat Tries (And Fails) To Bond With Courtney

Another Stargirl scene that was cut entirely from The CW edit took place before where the episode resumed after the first commercial break, with Pat dropping Courtney off at Blue Valley High School for her first day of classes. Pat tried to build a bond with Courtney, telling her that he understood why she was unhappy about the move and blamed him for it. Pat went on to describe how he had to move a lot when he was her age because of his father being a mechanic in the US Army. Courtney pointedly ignored Pat, however, as she was busily texting Mary while he was trying to open up to her. While not delivering any major plot information, the scene conveyed more information about Pat’s background and how he became a mechanic, and showed that he honestly was trying to make an effort to get along with Courtney, despite her complete disinterest in anything he had to say to her.

Courtney’s First Impression of Blue Valley High

Another brief cut came shortly after Courtney arrived at Blue Valley High School. The DC Universe edit of the Stargirl pilot shows Courtney as she entered the school and observed some of her classmates as she tried to find the guidance counselor, including one student practicing the tuba in the hallway and another performing a card trick to the amazement of his colleagues. There was also a quick cut of a creepy janitor, who seemed to stare at Courtney a little too intently.

Pat Finds His New Garage & Meets “Crusher” Crock

Minor cuts were made to the Stargirl scene in which Pat starts moving his mechanic’s gear into a garage he’s renting to use as a business. As he was starting to unpack, he was confronted by one of his neighbors, Larry “Crusher” Crock, who runs the local gym and offered Pat a discount. Pat politely tried to blow off the invitation but Crock would not take no for an answer, just like he would not allow Pat to call him anything but Crusher. The CW edit of this scene cut the opening music montage, set to Barry Mann’s “Who Put The Bomp,” in which Pat drives around Blue Valley in his classic convertible to the garage. It also cut the last few seconds of the scene, as Pat flexed his arm to inspect his muscles as if deciding whether or not he really did need to join a gym. The CW edit cuts away just before Pat shook his head and shrugged at how weird Crusher was.

Courtney’s First Encounter With Cindy Burman

Another scene that was cut entirely from The CW edit of the Stargirl pilot centers on Courtney Whitmore’s first encounter with Cindy Burman, and her hanger-on Jenny, before she goes to the cafeteria for the first time. At first Cindy and Jenny seemed friendly, though Courtney did seem freaked out that they somehow got her phone number already and that they started pushing her to try out for the cheerleading squad after knowing her for less than a minute. When Courtney said she’d like to hang out but that cheerleading isn’t really her thing, the other girls’ attitude immediately turned icy and Cindy (who was the head cheerleader) seemed to take it as a personal insult that Courtney just rejected a chance to be her second-in-command. While this scene doesn’t tie into the plot of the episode, it did set-up Cindy and Jenny’s reaction later (which was included in The CW edit) when Courtney picked a fight with a bully who turned out to be Cindy’s boyfriend.

Courtney in Detention And The Long Walk Home

The CW cut lacks a rather lengthy sequence detailing Courtney’s afternoon after she was sent to the principal’s office for fighting and was given detention after school. Nothing critical to the plot happens in this series of scenes, though the creepy janitor stares at Courtney again after she misses her bus. There is also a brief character moment as Courtney passes by a local diner as she walks home, and spends a moment watching a father and daughter eating together, further establishing her desire to find the father who seemingly abandoned her and her mother when she was five years old.

Courtney Finds A Newspaper Clipping Of Stripsey And The Star-Spangled Kid

The scene from the original DC Universe edit where Courtney began digging through Pat’s belongings in the basement and discovered his secret life as a superhero sidekick is largely intact. However, between Courtney finding a picture of the Justice Society of America and then another photo of Starman and Stripesy, there is a brief scene that was cut from The CW edit of the pilot. In this quick scene, Courtney finds an old newspaper showing Starman (back when he was still the Star-Spangled Kid) and Stripesy shortly after their victory over a villain called Dr. Weerd.

A Messy Marshmallow Situation Kept Off-Camera

Before Courtney Whitmore goes into the basement and discover’s Pat’s old photos and the Cosmic Staff, she walks past her stepbrother Mike in the kitchen, where he is microwaving marshmallows and feeding them to the family dog. For some reason, this scene was not cut from The CW edit of the episode despite having nothing to do with anything. The CW edit did, however, cut the punchline of this scene, after the Cosmic Staff pulled Courtney out of the basement and toward Blue Valley’s town square. As Courtney struggled to control the staff after returning to the ground floor, Pat Dugan can be overheard to shout that “the dog is throwing up marshmallows all over the bed!”

Courtney Offers More Information About Her Father, Sam Kurtis

Stargirl Everything The CW Version Cuts From DC Universes Show

After Courtney Whitmore returns home from delivering justice unto the local bullies (and setting their car on fire by accident) she finds Pat waiting for her in the basement. The scene from the DC Universe cut where the two discuss how it’s possible that Courtney can use the Cosmic Rod and Courtney hitting upon the idea that her father was Starman operating under an alias is largely intact in The CW edit of Stargirl. However, one brief line was cut where Courtney described her difficulties in trying to locate her father under his given name, Sam Kurtis, and how she couldn’t find a picture or any information about him on-line.

Brainwave Shows Off His Telekinesis And More Of His Costume Closet

Stargirl Everything The CW Version Cuts From DC Universes Show

Brainwave is the first member of the Injustice Society confirmed to be living in Blue Valley. After grilling his son, Henry, about the mysterious figure with the glowing staff who attacked him and his friends at the local drive-in movie theater, a secret passage opened up in his study, revealing a small closet and the Brainwave costume, along with a framed photo of a woman, a pile of VHS tapes and a VCR. In the DC Universe edit of this scene, Brainwave telekinetically moved a key across the room and used that to open the secret passage. The DC Universe edit of Stargirl also offers a longer look at the woman’s photo once the closet is open.

Brainwave Talks With Icicle About Starman’s Possible Return

Stargirl Everything The CW Version Cuts From DC Universes Show

The final full scene cut entirely from The CW edit of the Stargirl pilot centers around Brainwave calling a man named Jordan about the possibility that someone has assumed Starman’s identity and tracked them down. Jordan dismissed Brainwave’s concerns, but instructed him not to act until Jordan could return to Blue Valley. Brainwave agreed, but was revealed to have already changed into his costume and to be heading out the door to seek out this new enemy. Though not identified in the brief scene beyond his insistence that he killed Starman 10 years earlier, Jordan is Icicle; a cold-manipulating member of the Injustice Society.

Courtney’s Practices With The Cosmic Staff

Stargirl Everything The CW Version Cuts From DC Universes Show

Courtney enjoyed another training montage scene near the end of the episode, with the Cosmic Staff dragging her out of bed in the middle of the night and taking her to a rooftop overlooking Blue Valley’s town square. The brief scene showed Courtney practicing acrobatic flips off the rooftops and attempting a few gymnastic routines using the Cosmic Staff as a parallel bar and a balance beam. Some of these stunts were cut from The CW edit of the Stargirl episode.

Courtney’s Fight With Brainwave

The pilot episode of Stargirl concluded with Courtney being knocked out of the sky by Brainwave, who threw tires at her telekinetically until he could get close enough to her to start dragging her around through sheer force of will and start trying to read her mind and learn who she is. A few brief seconds of this fight, where Courtney starts using the Cosmic Staff to deflect the tires that are being thrown at her when she is cornered inside the Blue Valley Tires factory by Brainwave, are cut from the CW edit of the episode.
