Stellan Skarsgård makes an important point when talking about Martin Scorsese and his thoughts on the Marvel franchise. Skarsgård has had a long and illustrious career in film and television, beginning in Sweden and is best known for his roles in Good Will Hunting, Chernobyl, the Mamma Mia movies, and the upcoming Dune. He has also appeared as Dr. Erik Selvig in four MCU movies, notably Thor and The Avengers.

Recently, there has been an ongoing debate regarding the Marvel franchise with Martin Scorsese stating two years ago that he does not consider them cinema or art. While Scorsese has clarified his statements to great detail and many have supported his view, it has generated much controversy with actors and directors in the industry as well as fans of the superhero genre. Since then, it has garnered a larger response and discussion over time, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic when theaters are beginning to reopen, about what will entice audiences to fill seats.

Per Gizmodo, Skarsgård has been recently trending for his views on the matter during an in-depth discussion last year at the Götenberg Film Festival. There, he shared his thoughts, saying he believes that the major success and domination of the Marvel franchise comes from an economic standpoint. Instead of choosing a side in the debate, Skarsgård took the opportunity to explain how the film industry and the studios have focused more on the profit of movies rather than critical acclaim because of the business behind it. Skarsgård’s statements can be viewed below in a Twitter post by princess layla de lima:

when stellan skarsgard was asked about martin scorsese’s opinion of marvel, he used the opportunity focus on a larger critique of capitalism and i’m proud of him pic.twitter.com/Zfc6yAe06C

Skarsgård makes excellent points on the issue, realizing that the controversy is just part of a bigger problem with what is being distributed, but also not blaming Marvel because Hollywood has always been a business about money and marketing. For a very long time, there has been a discussion over the conflict of quality of films and what sells more money along with generating a bigger audience. And while independent films are continuing to rise to the mainstream, so has the large bulk of blockbuster franchises, specifically the MCU. Skarsgård has also made the argument that the current wave of distribution comes from the power of leadership and the expectation of a huge return on investments, such as parent companies.

With Skarsgård having starred in a balance of blockbuster franchises as well as independent films, he certainly understands both sides. But he recognizes that there is a larger scale that is the result of years of Hollywood capitalism and cautions that maybe things might be moving in a direction where there could be little room for smaller-budget or middle-tier projects. It is definitely something to consider, especially now that the movie business is rapidly changing with how audiences may view movies when they premiere and how that will affect distribution in the future. Overall, there is still a lot to be done, and hopefully Stellan Skarsgård’s comments can be taken into deep consideration in how things move forward.
