Stephen Colbert & The Late Show Are Going To Middle Earth For LOTR Spinoff

Stephen Colbert, noted Lord of the Rings fan, is taking The Late Show to Middle Earth this fall. Colbert has been very, very vocal about his love for Lord of the Rings over the years. As a devoted fan of J. R. R. Tolkien’s beloved fantasy epic, Colbert never misses a chance to sound off on the popular novels and films. Now, the late-night talk-show host will get the chance to make his Lord of the Rings dreams come true.

Like so many millions of others, Colbert has fallen in love with Tolkien’s timeless novels. After the incredible success of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, Tolkien’s first novel, The Hobbit, was adapted for the big screen as well. Next up, Amazon is producing a Lord of the Rings series for Amazon Prime Video. Although details are hard to come by at this early stage of development, Amazon has revealed that the show will be a prequel, set long before the events of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.

Vulture reports that this November, Colbert and The Late Show will be going to New Zealand for a series of broadcasts. For these very special episodes, Colbert will be interviewing Jackson. Together, Colbert and Jackson will also shoot a Lord of the Rings “spinoff” video for the show. However, not all of the New Zealand episodes will be based on Colbert’s love for Lord of the Rings, which was shot in New Zealand. In addition to his interview with the celebrated director, Colbert will also interview other famous New Zealanders like Lucy Lawless and Bret McKenzie. The Late Show will begin airing the episodes on Monday, November 18.

The Lord of the Rings spinoff will likely be some kind of parody video. Colbert has become known for pop-culture parody skits on his show. He’s previously created videos based on classic Hollywood films like Silence of the Lambs. As a self-confessed Lord of the Rings fanboy, it’s only natural that Colbert would use his late-night platform to shoot a skit based on the fantasy series, and not for the first time.

Of course, Colbert hasn’t limited his comedy to the pop culture realm. In recent years he’s also become a noted critic of President Donald Trump. He even filmed an Adventure Time-themed takedown of the president. And Lord of the Rings isn’t the only major franchise to get the host’s attention. Before the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Colbert filmed a bit predicting the movie’s plot. With a new Amazon Lord of the Rings series in development, now is the perfect time for the comedian to take his show on the road to Middle Earth. And, in less than one week, fans of Colbert and Lord of the Rings can see the results of his New Zealand adventure.
