Stranger Things Theory Why Billy & Max Really Moved To Hawkins

Stranger Things season 2 introduced the audience to Max (Sadie Sink) and Billy (Dacre Montgomery), who had just moved to Hawkins – but why exactly did they move there? In only three seasons, the Duffer Brothers’ sci-fi series Stranger Things has left more questions than the ones it has answered, and while most of them have to do with the Upside Down, the Demogorgon, the Mind Flayer, and all the horrors that live in the other dimension, there are also many questions about the human characters.

Season 1 of Stranger Things was all about the disappearance of Will Byers, the opening of a gate to another dimension, and Eleven’s escape from Hawkins Lab. Season 2 focused on the aftermath of Will’s time in the Upside Down, and season 3 confirmed that the people at Hawkins Lab aren’t the only ones interested in opening gates to other dimensions, as the Russians had been doing their own experiments and even established a lab underneath the new Starcourt Mall. Each season has had a monster villain but also at least one human menace, and Billy served as such twice.

Max and Billy were step-siblings, and they didn’t get along at all. Billy was very aggressive towards Max, and it was clear they didn’t like each other. Their family moved to Hawkins from California, but it was never explained why. The only clue there is is in the scene where Billy and Max are talking about Hawkins, with Max saying they’re stuck there, and Billy asking whose fault is it. Max mumbles “yours”, which enrages Billy, who then tries to force her to admit it’s her fault. This scene, along with the later reveal of Billy’s father being abusive, has raised a lot of questions about why they moved to Hawkins, with some believing Max ratted Billy out, and some even believe it has to do with Billy’s sexuality.

A fan theory suggests that Billy might have been gay, and Max caught him with a guy in California. While Max doesn’t really seem like the type who would rat someone out, she could have accidentally revealed Billy’s secret in front of his father, and as he is very aggressive, he made the decision of moving to another place. This theory is supported by Billy’s behavior in season 2, as he had a lot of anger bottled up, which could be a combination of how his father had treated him all his life and how homosexuality wasn’t accepted in the 1980s, and his father calling him a “fag”, which was either an intentional hint at what they went through in California or a way to insult his son. Billy’s behavior towards Steve also adds to the theory, as he could have been attracted to him, but again, as homosexuality wasn’t accepted back then, his feelings manifested as aggression.

Another reason could be all about Billy’s father, as separating his family from everyone they knew and cared about is typical abusive behavior – though that doesn’t explain why Max blames Billy for them having to move and vice-versa. Now that Billy is gone after sacrificing himself to keep Max and her friends safe, it’s unlikely viewers will learn why they moved to Hawkins in Stranger Things season 2, and unless the books decide to expand on their backstory, it will continue to be open to interpretation.
