TV’s favorite rich-as-anything Daddy’s Boy is back in action. In Succession’s third season, fans have seen a lot of action from every member of the deliciously detestable Roy family. From Roman’s smug sidewinding sneers to Shiv’s shifty sneak attacks, the Roy siblings seem destined to lock horns forever, spoiling viewers with all of the juicy conflicts a capitalistic system under duress has to offer.

But of all the rising and falling characters in the Roy clan, Kendall takes the cake for making earth-shattering mistakes that only he could get away with. By the end of the season, Kendall is doomed to once again fall into a self-destructive trap. There’s a special joy in knowing all the reasons why this rich kid will forever be on the outs.

9 He Doesn’t Face The Consequences Of His Actions

When most kids mess up, they’re punished by their parents so they don’t make that mistake again in the real world. When Kendall messes up, his dad covers up his mistakes, only ensuring Kendall’s doomed to face them again. When Kendall killed the waiter at the end of the first season, he may as well have forgotten he had, because Logan made that problem go away. Without fully realizing the consequences of his actions, how will he ever learn? This rich kid will always have a money cushion to catch him when he falls.

8 He’s Way Too Overconfident

Kendall thinks he rules the world, and in a way, he’s not totally wrong. Born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he’s had whatever he’s wanted all his life, though he’s never had to work for it. But what goes up must come down, and his confidence reaches just as many dramatic lows as it does soaring highs.

Kendall emotionally crashes and burns just as many times as he squares his shoulders and rises to the occasion, and he’s due for a searing burn.

7 His Relationship With His Siblings Is Atrocious

Sibling rivalries are not only common fare, they can actually be conducive to personal growth. These everyday squabbles help people sort out their feelings with others. But among the Roys, there’s no trust, no compassion, and most importantly, no one who wants to help Kendall. With nasty letters flying and fiery bedroom talks roaring, Kendall doesn’t have a single sibling in his corner in Succession. This will make his downfall that much more crushing.

6 He Hasn’t Actually Developed Any Skills

To rise up in business, one typically needs to master many skills. Closing a deal means forming a connection with someone, and to form a connection, one has to understand body language, active listening, and above all else, self-restraint. Kendall has no actionable skills because he never had to acquire any actionable skills. From his assistant to his lawyer, he’s dissed people in his circle one after another in Succession because he simply doesn’t know any better. If he had a better read on people, maybe he could finally get down to business, but for now, he’s doomed to fail.

5 He’s Addicted To Narcotics

Kendall is Succession’s perennially struggling drug addict, and Succession follows his drug usage and reliance . Often explosive, radical, and downright destructive scenes, when Kendall gets his hands on narotics, what follows often blows everyone out of the water.

With such a crippling problem in his background, Kendall would struggle to make it in the business big leagues. Moreover, he’s still attached to Naomi Pierce, who connected with Kendall because of their shared substance reliance. Kendall’s doomed from the get-go because he can’t hope to resolve his own addictions.

4 He Never Had To Make It On His Own

Kendall is all about turning some cash into more cash. But, because he’s never known what it’s like to be without money, he’s never known what it’s like to truly create in a capitalist system. The system is on Kendall’s side even if he pretends it’s not, which means he lacks the financial and emotional wherewithal to make the dramatic industry splash he hopes to achieve. Kendall never started from nothing, which means soon enough, he’ll likely be hitting a new rock bottom all his own.

His Dad Is Too Powerful

For all his emotional and personal deficiencies, Logan Roy is a powerful man. After building an international media empire from humble beginnings, Logan now wields more power than the vast majority of the US government. Viewers have watched him bear that power everywhere, from boardroom calls with the President to Congressional hearings. Though Logan’s stroke was the impetus for Succession in the first place, a failing body can’t keep Logan Roy down for long. Through every season, we’ve seen him champion initiative after initiative to ensure Waystar Royco retains world-renowned power. Kendall can’t hope to keep up with his dad’s charisma.

3 He’s Neglecting His Kids

Kendall has yelled at his sensitive son and accidentally killed his daughter’s rabbit. His kids get barely any screen time in Succession. While Kendall galivants around the world trying to take down his father, his kids are at home, wishing for a chance to see their dad. Tragically, Kendall is passing down to his son and daughter the very same flawed role model dynamics which shaped him. Without a strong familial base behind him, Kendall’s business foundations are crumbling, and viewers are left bearing witness to a man who can’t stand on steady ground.

2 His Oedipus Complex Is Showing

Kendall Roy has been called “Oedipus” in Succession in more creative variations than any viewer can reasonably be expected to remember. The story lines up: the single biggest aspect of his character is his desire to ‘kill’ his father, similar to the titular character in the Greek tragedy.

But one thing Kendall doesn’t understand is that even after Oedipus killed his father, he gouged out his eyes, forever blinding himself. Kendall’s figurative blindness means he might not even get the chance to progress that far.

1 He Doesn’t Want To Succeed

In the end, Kendall doesn’t even want what he’s working to achieve. His father sacrificed his morals and sense of self for financial gain, and Kendall inherited that fundamental trauma from him. But Kendall isn’t willing to make the same moral sacrifice his father made – and in the corrupt world of business, that personhood is only a weakness. Again and again, Kendall’s made reference to running away and leaving all his wealth behind, only trapping him at the bottom of the business ladder. His father would never say such frivolous things because Logan is destined to run Waystar Royco, not Kendall.
