From PR assistants to billionaire shareholders, the Succession cast has just gotten bigger this year. The latest season of the HBO original has been drawing raves from critics and audiences alike, introducing a whole lot of new characters. While some of the new entrants to the ensemble are played by newcomers, popular stars like Adrien Brody and Alexander Skarsgård ended up making this season even more star-studded.
No matter how brief their role might be, these characters ended up adding more intensity to the overall storyline that is getting more and more unpredictable with every passing episode.
Ron Petkus
The episode “What It Takes” reveals the threatening control that billionaires like Logan Roy can have on American politics and international affairs. As the Roys attend a summit that can determine the future President of the country, Ron Petkus appears as one of the people who pulls the strings of the “puppet” politicians.
Played by noted character actor Stephen Root as a guest star on Succession, Petkus has a brief role but the power he wields makes him noteworthy. He is a conservative political donor who hosts the Future Freedom Summit in Virginia. Petkus is the one who introduces other potential donors to the candidates and the profitability that each candidate would offer.
Sandi Furness
Stewy’s business ally and Sandy’s daughter, Sandi Furness comes off as a major player in the proxy battle for the ownership of Waystar Rocco.
Even though she mostly serves on behalf of her bedridden father, she might have some tricks up her sleeve in the future seasons. Not much is known about her intentions but much like Stewy, she despises the Roys and wishes to buy them out of their own company. Such dimensions might imply a bigger future for her after Season 3. She is played by Hope Davis, the Emmy nominee mostly known for In Treatment.
Jeryd Mencken
Jeryd Mencken comes off as an undesirable character right from the start. He is introduced as a Republican Congressman with dated fascist ideas. Even though he is a controversial figure, Roman and Logan Roy back him as their presidential frontrunner as they feel it’s Mencken’s charisma that can increase ATN’s ratings.
The character has a domineering presence with his questionable views. Audiences might doubt his morals but he perfectly fits in the twisted world of Succession, gelling well with the other loud-mouthed characters who have powerful political connections. Justin Kirk who is known for acting in the early 2000s HBO show Angels in America plays the part of Jeryd.
Sophie Iwobi
A satirist with her own late-night talk show, Sophie Iwobi roasts Kendall following his exposé of Waystar Rocco. While some people start celebrating him as a feminist, Sophie looks through the controversy and claims that Kendall is just settling a personal score with his father.
A threat to Kendall’s PR, he agrees to appear on her talk show The Disruption to clear his name even though he bails at the last moment. The character feels very natural probably because actress Ziwe Fumudoh is herself involved in satirical comedy on politics and race, hosting her own talk show Ziwe for Showtime.
Contessa
When it comes to influential figures, the Succession ensemble doesn’t only include entrepreneurs and politicians but also European royals. The latest case in point is the woman simply known as Contessa who is depicted as an Italian countess with an interest in hosting online brand campaigns. She is played by actress Ella Rumpf who is perhaps best known for the body horror movie Raw.
By the Season 3 finale, she becomes more important for she develops a romantic association with Greg. This means that Greg can have a royal future by the next season, as opposed to his “black sheep” status in the Roy family. While Tom convinces him to not go down the romantic path this fast, Contessa and Greg’s love affair might spell out interesting developments for the future.
Comfry Pellits
As Kendall’s manic personality leads to more impulsive decisions in Season 3, he hires a PR team that includes Comfry Pellits, a PR crisis representative who works as an assistant under Kendall’s consultant Berry. Her role increases towards the season’s latter half as Kendall’s public image becomes more turbulent. All this time, Greg also seems to develop feelings for her despite being told by others that she is “out of his league”.
Greg seems to change his romantic interest with Contessa entering the picture but Comfry still seems to be a character with potential for major growth in future storylines. By the finale, Kendall is definitely not in his best mental state. So, he would clearly need more inputs from his PR representatives. Comfry is played by Dasha Nekrasova, an actress who is also known for her directorial debut horror film The Scary of Sixty-First.
Peter Munion
The Roy siblings’ “new father” is teased throughout the entire season and finally appears towards the final episodes, moments before his marriage to Caroline Collingwood. Munion is depicted as a British CEO with a slew of failed marriages and unprofitable business ventures.
Still, he tries to show himself as a calm and cool personality, leading to laughable and awkward results. He is judged by Collingwood’s children as well as her ex-husband Logan Roy. Munion seeking Logan’s help for starting a business in Britain means that maybe their paths would cross again in the future. Pip Torrens seems to be in his comfort zone while playing the bumbling character even though it is a far cry from his usual authoritarian characters in shows like The Crown and The Nevers.
Josh Aaronson
A billionaire shareholder who holds four percent equity in Waystar Rocco, Josh Aaronson comes off as a calm and composed person on the surface. But when it comes to business, he comes straight to the point by telling both Logan and Kendall how much power he has over Waystar.
Amidst the cold war between the two Roys, it is Josh who is able to bring both father and son together for a change. He asks them to mend their ways before the company suffers any more negative publicity. Academy Award-winner Adrien Brody adds a certain charm to the character while also building the buzz around Season 3.
Lukas Mattson
The most important new character in Season 3 is undoubtedly Lukas Mattson considering the integral role that he plays in the shockingly unpredictable finale. While he seems to be a harmless rich brat in his first appearance, the Swedish CEO of the streaming platform GoJo emerges as a major player when he plans to own Waystar with his own board of executives.
Such is his commanding presence that even Logan controls his usual temper around him. Desperate to not be defeated by his children, he even manages to finalize the deal with Lukas towards the end. As Waystar’s new head honcho, it is possible for Lukas to play an even bigger role in the next season. Ever since the Big Little Lies star Alexander Skarsgård appeared in Season 3’s trailer, there was much hype around his character. Needless to say, his role lived up to the hype among the fans.
