Sung Kangs ObiWan Reveal Supports Darth Vader Inquisitor Rumors

Sung Kang has revealed a new detail about his character in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+, supporting a rumor that he’ll be playing one of Darth Vader’s Inquisitors. The much-anticipated series will see Ewan MacGregor’s long-awaited return to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi, now living on Tatooine to keep a low profile in the age of the Empire and to watch over a young Luke Skywalker. Sung Kang, famous for playing Han in the Fast & Furious series, is rumored to be playing an Inquisitor, specifically the Fifth Brother from Star Wars Rebels.

Imperial Inquisitors, who originated from Legends-era Star Wars material, are one of the Empire’s Sith-trained, dark side-using organizations who assist Darth Vader in hunting down the galaxy’s few Jedi who survived Order 66. Inquisitors made their canon debut in Rebels, becoming some of the Ghost crew’s most dangerous and persistent foes. Two Inquisitors were also antagonists in Jedi: Fallen Order. As revealed in 2017’s Darth Vader comics, the Inquisitors are all Jedi survivors of Order 66 who surrendered to the Empire and fell to the dark side, betraying their fellow Jedi.

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Sung Kang discussed his role in F9 but also reminisced on his lifelong Star Wars fandom and how it relates to his upcoming role in Obi-Wan Kenobi. Kang revealed that his character will wield a lightsaber, which further supports the rumor that he’ll be playing an Inquisitor. Kang’s interview doesn’t necessarily fuel the rumor that he’s playing the Fifth Brother, however. Kang may still play a dark side-using Imperial Inquisitor, but there are several reasons why he probably won’t specifically be the Fifth Brother, especially if his character becomes an adversary of Obi-Wan’s.

All Inquisitors report directly to Darth Vader, serving as his agents and unofficial Sith apprentices. As shown in the Darth Vader comics, Rebels and Fallen Order, Vader often worked alongside the Inquisitors on missions and had a habit of commandeering their missions when one fails or dies. With this in mind, it seems unlikely that Kang will play the Fifth Brother since he’s a reoccurring antagonist in Rebels season 2 and dies in the finale. If he encountered Obi-Wan at some point before his Rebels appearance, he’d have reported his discovery to Vader, potentially contradicting dialogue in Star Wars. The Fifth Brother could hypothetically fight Obi-Wan without altering the timeline if they met on a different planet than Tatooine and if the Inquisitor didn’t recognize his opponent as the famous Clone Wars-era General, but it’s unlikely.

There are numerous Imperial Inquisitors in canon so far, so even if Sung Kang isn’t playing the Fifth Brother, he could still be one of Vader’s Inquisitors. The ten Inquisitors shown in the comics and screen media are likely out of the question, but Vader could easily have trained more dark side agents. As an original Inquisitor character, Sung Kang could discover Obi-Wan on Tatooine and die in a climactic fight with the Jedi Master. As long as Obi-Wan stops him from reporting his findings to Vader and prevents the Empire from thinking he was killed by a Jedi, Sung Kang could play an Inquisitor without creating continuity snarls.

Another possibility is that Sung Kang plays a character who wields a lightsaber but isn’t an Inquisitor. The series will take place during the reign of the Empire, and while most of the Jedi are dead, Kang could play a fellow Order 66 survivor and ally to Obi-Wan. Or, like Taron Malicos, Kang’s character could also be a Jedi who falls to the dark side after surviving the Jedi Purge, becoming a threat to Obi-Wan, but not one affiliated with the Empire. Whether or not the rumors are true that Sung Kang will be one of Darth Vader’s Inquisitors, his role in the Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi series remains an enticing mystery.
