A new feature has been announced for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, as four players can now tackle the Captain Toad stages together. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is an upgraded Nintendo Switch port of the underappreciated Wii U classic.

The original Super Mario 3D World included a series of stages called Captain Toad’s Adventures, starring the titular mushroom man. The Captain Toad levels were short puzzle stages, centered around the fact that Captain Toad couldn’t jump. These levels were so well-regarded that they led to a full-fledged Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker Wii U spin-off, which was also ported to the Switch. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker famously began life as a Zelda game, but it ultimately gained a Mario identity and became an interesting part of the Super Mario Bros. franchise.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury has lots of new content, including an entirely new world involving a battle against giant Bowser. The Captin Toad levels will return in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, and they’ll include a brand new feature. According to the Super Mario UK Twitter page, the Captain Toad levels will now include four-player co-op, demonstrating what the new multiplayer gameplay looks like in the brief video below.

The people who are worried that they won’t be able to play Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury with their friends won’t have to worry. The original game only featured local co-op, but Nintendo has added online multiplayer to the Switch port. This should also apply to the Captain Toad stages, allowing players from around the world to take on the role of the Toad Brigade. This new co-op feature is even better than the Switch version of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, as that only included two-player co-op. The only question will be the quality of the online connectivity and general user experience, areas where Nintendo historically disappoints.

The modern Super Mario Bros. games don’t get enough credit their multiplayer elements. The quickest way to end a friendship is to be dropped in a pit by a buddy in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. While Super Mario 3D World on the Wii U was an well-liked multiplayer experience, it was limited by its co-op being local-only. The addition of online multiplayer to Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is a huge improvement over what the original lacked, and that multiplayer chaos will evidently be spilling over into the game’s Captain Toad courses.
