The upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie is almost finished, according to Nintendo producer and game director Shigeru Miyamoto.

During a Q&A session after a financial results meeting, Miyamoto revealed that although the movie is finished, it still needs refining. Translated by Japan-based analyst and investment advisor David Gibson on Twitter, Miyamoto stated that the movie was “pretty much done,” and that Nintendo had a “very good feeling about it.” He also added that Nintendo is being “very careful” to “not betray customers,” opting to continue work on the film so that it is polished and meets fan expectations.

Miyamoto also confirmed that more Nintendo-based films could be happening in the future, adding that they “would like to roll out with other IPs for movies.” He did, however, add that they would like to release future projects one by one, rather than producing multiple projects at the same time. Some of the other popular franchises in Nintendo’s catalog include Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Donkey Kong and The Legend of Zelda.

The film — which is to be made by Despicable Me and The Secret Life Of Pets animation studio Illumination — is currently untitled, with little known about any plot details. The partnership between Illumination and Nintendo was announced in 2018, with Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri co-producing alongside Miyamoto. It is the third adaptation of Nintendo’s Super Mario videogame, following a 1986 Japanese-only anime film and the 1993 live-action film Super Mario Bros.

The movie is set to feature an all-star ensemble voice cast, featuring Chris Pratt in the titular role of Mario. Pratt received a mixed reaction when his casting was announced in September this year, with some fans expressing their disappointment. However, Mario voice actor Charles Martinet will star in the upcoming film in undisclosed cameo roles. Martinet has previously voiced other characters in the Super Mario game including Luigi, Wario and Waluigi.

Other featured cast members include Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Foreman Spike.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the Super Mario Bros movie is scheduled to be released in theaters on Dec. 21, 2022.
