Nintendo Switch owners won’t be required to use motion controls while playing Super Mario Galaxy in the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection. With Super Mario Galaxy being a title that was first released on the Nintendo Wii, Mario fans began to question how they would play the game without a Wii Remote. Don’t worry, Nintendo has it under control.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a collection of classic 3D Mario titles including Super Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy. These games will receive a slight upgrade in the form of HD resolutions and 16:9 dimensions. The existence of the remastered Mario titles was leaked earlier this year, and even then Nintendo fans questioned how a game like Super Mario Galaxy would function on the Switch. Super Mario Galaxy’s extensive use of the Wii’s motion controls and sensor bar could have caused problems for Nintendo, but it seems as if it has found a solution to these problems.

The official Super Mario 3D All-Stars page makes it clear that players won’t have to use motion controls, at least in handheld mode, as the game supports multiple different controllers and system modes. Super Mario 3D All-Stars can be played on the TV, in tabletop mode, or in handheld mode. It also supports Joy-Cons (attached and detached) and the Nintendo Pro-Controller. Motion controls are an option, as the Switch’s Joy-Cons can be used to simulate the pointer and shaking the Joy-Con will have the same effect as shaking a Wii Remote in the original Super Mario Galaxy. A statement from Nintendo to Polygon further clarified the requirements of motion controls.

“Super Mario Galaxy is supported in TV, Tabletop and Handheld Modes. In TV and Tabletop modes, motion controls are required for pointer functionality. In Handheld Mode, pointer functionality has been adapted to use Touch Screen.”

Pointer and Motion controls were imperative to use when playing Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii, so it will be interesting to see how Nintendo has worked around these issues using the Switch’s touchscreen. While Mario’s spin move can be bound to a button, some levels require the player to use the pointer as the sole means of transportation. Players even have to use the pointer if they want to enter a level in the original game. Whether those functions will work as well using touch controls remains to be seen.

The confirmation that Super Mario Galaxy won’t require motion controls is good news, but there may still be room for improvement on how it handles that transition. Touchscreen controls are a great compromise, but an additional option to control the game’s pointer with a combination of a button press and moving the analog stick – like the two options for aiming Link’s bow in Breath of the Wild – would be welcome. Super Mario Galaxy on the Nintendo Switch may not feel as authentic as playing on the Wii, but it sure is great to have an HD version of Mario’s own space adventure.
