Nintendo has released an update for Super Mario Party out of the blue, finally adding more game modes and functionality to online multiplayer.

Over two years since its release, Nintendo just surprise dropped a Super Mario Party update that finally brings the Switch game’s online multiplayer up to par with its local offerings. To players’ disappointment until now, Super Mario Party never received significant content updates after launch despite being a barebones experience by franchise standards, so at least allowing Nintendo Switch Online subscribers to share the core experience online is a decent start.
On top of demanding more boards than the game’s still paltry count of four, Super Mario Party buyers were also left dissatisfied with the lack of features in the game’s online multiplayer at launch. Friends could only face off in the Mariothon mode, which only included a handful of minigames. Friends scored points based on placement in the minigames, and after five games, the winner would be crowned. It left a lot to be desired and is one of several reasons Nintendo fans regard Super Mario Party among the likes of Mario Party 9 and 10, which are widely considered the worst in the series. Some have held out hope that the game would be fixed piecemeal via free or paid DLC in the months and years following its release, and it seems they’re getting at least a taste of what they’ve been asking for.
The latest update was a complete surprise, announced by Nintendo on Tuesday after receiving no prior reveal or preamble. The Super Mario Party update can be installed when players’ Nintendo Switch is connected to the internet, and it will expand online multiplayer options to Mario Party, Partner Party, and Free Play game modes. Players can invite friends or create a room with its own private code. Now, players can play over 70 minigames with friends over the Nintendo Online platform by inviting friends or creating a room with a private code.
There are two ways to play over the internet: one player per system and two players per system, each with its restrictions. If two players are each playing on their own systems, a third party cannot join with two on the same system. However, two systems can connect with two players on each.
The online multiplayer game modes allow access to all 20 characters, the four available boards, and 70 minigames. Playing over the internet excludes 10 games, such as Strike It Rich, Time to Shine, and Take a Stab, among others. The only caveat is that play data won’t be saved when playing over the internet, but it is still a lot better than not being able to play at all. The new update does a lot to fix Super Mario Party’s online experience, but this is likely too little too late for many who have moved on from the game.
While it took over two years to achieve, Nintendo finally added an expansive and thoroughly enjoyable online multiplayer experience for Super Mario Party. It is strange that it took so long considering the game’s emphasis on competition, minigames, and variety – three things woefully neglected in the original online multiplayer system. Now players will have to hope Nintendo is committed to further updates, as this preliminary fix only addresses one of several problems.
