Spoilers ahead for Superman and the Authority #2!
In Superman and the Authority #2, Natasha Irons shows the right way to beat Ultron. In the issue, on sale now in print and digital, Superman is assembling a new and better version of the Authority, and Natasha Irons, Steel’s niece, is one of his first recruits. As the Man of Steel watches, Natasha takes on a rogue AI, like Ultron, and demonstrates the right way to beat such a creature.
Writer Grant Morrison is rebooting the classic Wildstorm-era superhero team the Authority, this time focused around Superman. The Man of Steel made a promise to JFK that he would make the world a better place, and when he realizes the world’s problems need different kinds of solutions, he brings together the Authority. Superman recruits Manchester Black, previously one of his biggest haters, to the cause. Superman needs the best and the brightest, and in issue two, he begins assembling his team, beginning with Natasha Irons.
SAfter Superman recruits Irons, readers then get to see her in action. Her uncle was exploring the “Datacosmos” when rogue digital lifeforms attacked. These lifeforms access data from our world and transform themselves into literal embodiments of toxic internet culture. Every shameful trait displayed online, such as doxing and bullying is called out as Natasha fights actual internet trolls. Natasha realizes the AI does not know any better—it absorbed all the toxic elements without seeing any of the good. It had no real context for its actions and Natasha honed in on the AI and negotiates peace. Watching in the Fortress of Solitude, Superman is impressed.
Natasha’s handling of the situation shows that in some instances, it is better to outthink an opponent, and not simply blast or fight a way out of any given situation. Natasha recognized the AI simply needed more information, that it wanted only to learn. She came up with a solution that satisfied all parties. Granted, the variables in each situation will be different, and she may have to actually fight, but it shows a more compassionate, empathetic approach to fighting villains. Superman takes a similar approach, despite his great powers, and he recognizes that quality in Natasha recruiting her for his new version of the Authority. However, how will Natasha’s strategies collide with those of more direct and brutal heroes, like her teammate Midnighter?
Whatever the case, Superman has brought together a new incarnation of the Authority, ones with the brains to find better ways to defeat villains like Ultron.
