Superman Just Lost Control of his Most Dangerous Power

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Justice League #61!

In the latest issue of Justice League, the Earth’s greatest hero, Superman, loses control of his most dangerous power, his heat vision. The events that precede Superman’s freak occurrence are important. Previously, the Justice League’s newest villain Brutus comments on how Earth’s air is refreshing to breathe. Brutus has lived in his planet’s poisonous atmosphere and endured for years. Additionally, it is revealed that he survived a war of attrition and was among only the few who were left standing, as almost every superpowered being was killed. All of this context is important for what happens to Superman in this issue.

The Justice League, with the help of Naomi, follows Brutus to his home planet. This occurs after Brutus’ latest visit to Earth, where the League decides to make a bold move to try and get the upper hand. As Brutus arrives home for the second time, he is not greeted kindly as his higher-ups are dissatisfied with his progress. However, he is adamant that Earth is the exact place that they’ve been searching for. And it just so happens that what stands in his way on Earth comes right for him. The Justice League arrives on his and Naomi’s planet, only to be scattered and separated.

In Justice League #61 by Brian Michael Bendis, David Marquez, and Tamra Bonvillain, Superman loses control of his heat vision as it goes haywire. Just like Superman, Brutus’ abilities are complemented by Earth’s atmosphere. However, arriving on Brutus’ planet causes the opposite effect for Superman. Clark is unable to rein in his heat vision as it uncontrollably blasts everywhere. Luckily, he doesn’t lose his ability to fly, which allows him to prevent any destruction to the grounds below. Coming face to face with Superman’s heat vision isn’t a good thing for anyone, powered or not. Pure blasts of energy, capable of vaporizing holes into solid mass, uncontrollably shooting all over the place is a disaster waiting to happen.

As Brutus had described, the environment on his planet is toxic and poisonous. The League members make multiple comments on its smell throughout the issue. Presumably, it was once a haven for its citizens before the superpowered wars destroyed everything, including the environment. This has a massive effect on Justice League members like Superman. Just like being under a red sun, something about Brutus’ planet is reacting against Superman’s Kryptonian powers. Some League members who are just human, like Batman and Green Arrow, are unaffected. But others are impacted in a different way from Superman and Naomi, who starts to vanish. For example, Black Canary’s cry is amped up and able to cause more destruction than usual.

Evidently, each Justice League member’s powers react differently. Therefore, some are given a power boost as they note in this issue. But some are halted as their unique DNA somehow reacts to the planet’s atmosphere. By the end of the issue, Brutus realizes that the Justice League followed him and he takes care of Superman, who is incapacitated with his power overhaul. Coming to Superman’s rescue is Black Adam, who seems to have his powers. However, he is quickly defeated as Brutus takes the upper hand, fighting in his home turf. As the villain had previously said, he’s had to endure living in poison and therefore, he has adapted and can easily take down both Justice League members.
