It’s been almost a decade since The Last of Us wowed not only the gaming fanbase but the entertainment industry as well. Its resemblance to a blockbuster zombie film, combined with thematic styles both of the heartwarming and violent variety, has made the hype around the sequel extremely huge.
With The Last of Us Part II just around the corner, it’s essential to know what to expect before starting your playthrough. You don’t need to worry about spoilers here, as this list covers everything fans will be excited to learn, and it’s completely safe to read through. So, before jumping back into the zombie world, here are 10 things about the sequel that are already known.
10 The Story Is Meant To Be Polarizing
No matter what takes place in the plot, it is guaranteed that a sizable amount will not like it. The story is meant to surround the theme of hate, meaning there won’t be the heartwarming moments that fans enjoyed in the first game. It also means you better buckle up for a downer ending.
Troy Baker, the voice actor for Joel, has gone so far as to make the claim that, while players won’t be “ambivalent” about the story, the plot will most definitely not sit well with some. This brings the overall feel of the game to a gritty one, and the cutscenes and events will reflect just this.
9 Joel Is Not The Playable Character But Is Prominent To The Story
There’s been a lot of speculation over Joel’s role, with some arguing he might be similar to Wolverine in Logan. However, that’s not the case, as Joel isn’t even meant to be a playable character. What is certain, though, is that Joel’s role is important.
Troy Baker has claimed that Joel has a “central” part to play in the plot, meaning he will most definitely show up during the events of the story. Even if he doesn’t show up as much, Joel will not be relegated to a bit player, that’s for sure.
8 Increase In Violence And Brutality During Gameplay
The fight sequences in the first game was meant to illustrate how Joel was training Ellie to survive, while also showing how no-holds barred beatdowns were the norm. In The Last of Us Part II, the violence is not with the intent of accustoming players to this world.
Instead, it will incorporate the theme of hate, which entails a whole lot of bloody sequences that include torture and murder. This won’t even be in the form of zombie fights, as it is against humans where the violence will reach levels that some might be uncomfortable with.
7 Platforming Is A Major Factor
The sequel expands upon the concept introduced in the first part over Ellie’s physique. Rather than make her as strong as Joel was, this game will focus on her agility. To this end, platforming plays a pretty substantial role.
This time around, the player can reach bigger heights to use as vantage points in order to scope out areas. Along with that, escaping and stealth sequences will employ Ellie’s ability to squeeze into places or jump onto difficult surfaces.
6 The Setting And Backdrop
Where the original game had pretty much the whole country as the main backdrop, this one will have focus on one location. While it’s not going to be the only place players explore, it is Seattle where the bulk of the game takes place.
The reason for this ties into the story, meaning fans will have a purpose to stick around the Washington area as the plot plays out. In terms of timeline, the plot takes place five years after the events where Joel and Ellie left off.
5 There’s No Multiplayer, Yet
In order to make the exploration opportunities more expansive, the developers have sacrificed the online component of the game. It won’t be available by the time The Last of Us Part II releases, although there is a chance for multiplayer to arrive separately.
If that does happen, this mode will be independent of the main game, which can be similar to GTA Online. In case you’re hoping for multiplayer on the disk you purchase, then you’re in for a disappointment as that definitely won’t be on offer.
4 Upgrades Are Part Of A Skill Tree
It’s become all the rage for games in this genre to incorporate skill trees. In recent years, there’s been a definite separation between skills which have to be upgraded, and The Last of Us Part II incorporates this as well.
While this was available in the first game too, the sequel divides these more clearly, as they fall under Survival, Crafting, and Stealth categories. These will present noticeable enhancements, such as melee effectiveness and gun control, unlike the original release where the upgrades hadn’t felt as apparent.
3 The File Size Of The Game
Hoo boy, are fans in for something of a shock here. Before playing the game, most will need to clear out a lot of space in their systems as The Last of Us Part II’s size is about 100 GB! That’s right, this makes it the largest game to be released on the system.
The listing of the title has revealed that it will be released on two discs to accommodate the size, with the first one used to install the game on the PlayStation 4 while the other is the actual gameplay disc.
2 A New Version Of Stealth
It’s not easy surviving during the zombie apocalypse, and simply hiding around isn’t going to work anymore. In The Last of Us Part II, stealth is supposed to be realistic, in that players will need to actually find positions to hide rather than rely on simple cover mechanics.
A unique inclusion is the presence of guard dogs, which will be out to track the scent of the player, meaning even hiding won’t work during these sequences. This is meant to keep players on their toes and to avoid relying on vantage points and slower pacing.
1 It Is The Longest Game In Naughty Dog’s History
Naughty Dog have progressively made newer releases longer than before, when their games were relatively shorter. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was noticeably quite a large game to complete, but the developers are doing one better here. It’s currently not confirmed exactly how long the runtime will be, since different players take different time to complete playthroughs.
However, given that Uncharted 4 took gamers 15 hours and above on average, it’s for certain that The Last of Us Part II will fall in the 20-25 hour range. This gives fans a whole lot of time to get their exploration, side missions, and story pacing in check.
