Superman & Lois Recast (& Fixed) Arrowverses Morgan Edge

Superman & Lois recast Supergirl’s Morgan Edge, thus giving the Arrowverse a new version of the character and one that’s better. A long-time Superman supporting player and oft times villain in the comics, this new Superman & Lois version will make the fourth iteration of the character on-screen. This darker, more intense Morgan Edge that Superman & Lois is setting up as the show’s main villain is far closer to his original comic book roots than the previous version in the Arrowverse.

The original Morgan Edge of the comics was a ruthless media mogul who buys the Daily Planet and puts Clark Kent to work as a television reporter. Following the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, he was changed to a Superman villain and crime lord. More recent comics portray him as an anti-Kryptonian media pundit. Animated versions of the character have appeared in Super-Friends and Justice League, the latter making him a billionaire with a penchant for collecting unusual objects, sometimes even people. Earlier TV versions have kept some aspects of Edge’s comic history while not quite capturing his original menace from the comics. Lois & Clark’s Morgan Edge, for example, was the head of the “Intergang” crime organization, while on Smallville, the character was a more dangerous Metropolis crime lord crossing paths and swords with Lex Luthor’s father, Lionel.

Supergirl presented the first Arrowverse version of Morgan Edge in season 3 but did not do the character justice, changing him from a media powerhouse to a stereotypically cartoonish real estate mogul. Meanwhile, Superman & Lois’s Morgan Edge is the head of a business conglomerate and quite possibly the head of a criminal organization. In just a few episodes, his actions after buying the Daily Planet and initiating layoffs, including Clark, and the fact that he is buying up small towns under the guise of restoring them, has raised red flags with Lois so that he is now on her investigative radar. Already, this version of Morgan Edge is much closer to the comics and is more in line with his goals as a villain.

The problem with Supergirl’s Morgan Edge was that he was never Supergirl’s adversary. He was presented as a foil for Lena Luthor and reduced to a business rival role. With his bombastic personality and over-sized ego, that Edge was a Saturday morning cartoon’s villain. He would randomly employ unsavory tactics to try and tip the scales in his favor, such as poisoning, assassinations, and torpedoing a public event. He just never came across as that menacing. When the show let him fail at buying CatCo, it discarded an intriguing storyline and dilemma for Kara as a reporter, a storyline which years later would be revived by Andrea Rojas and Obsidian North. Edge was never written as a formidable opponent.

Superman & Lois’s more somber, sinister take makes their Morgan Edge edgier than Supergirl’s ever was. Lois’ early interaction with him clearly shows a dangerous man whose bearing and demeanor exude power and foreboding. Their encounter highlighted the fact that he gets his way no matter what. This Edge can also be as smooth as a snake-oil salesman when trying to charm those he plans to take advantage of, like the people of Smallville. He’s described in press materials as Superman & Lois’ main villain; although right now his most contentious encounters have been only with Lois, he clearly has more nefarious plans cooking. This Edge is cunning and dangerous, the dark Morgan Edge of the comics comes to life at last.

Morgan Edge’s true plans for Smallville are just beginning to unfold on Superman & Lois. And while they have not run afoul of one another yet, it has already been established that he will be a worthy opponent for Superman. Like other aspects of the show, giving Morgan Edge a darker, more sinister countenance is shaped by the show’s respect for Superman, Clark Kent, and Lois Lane’s comic book history.
