WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 2, Episode 2, “The Ties That Bind,” which aired Tuesday, Jan. 18 on The CW.
While Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s home life is going through a transition as the couple raises two teenage boys in Smallville, Superman finds himself cut off from his usual sources of support and enduring a crippling new condition that overloads his senses and gives him troubling visions from a strange perspective. And as the family faces drama and challenges, both professional and personal, Superman decides to turn to an unlikely source for help.
The Kents adjust to having the Irons living with them on the farm before Clark endures another sensory overload in the middle of a family breakfast, with Clark confiding in Lois and John that he’s receiving ominous visions that leave him momentarily incapacitated. Lois and Clark speculate that he is receiving residual memories of Krypton’s destruction from temporarily bonding with Zod’s psyche. The parents worry that Jordan will similarly be affected since he also served as a host for a Kryptonian spirit, with Clark deciding to look further into the matter to ensure he and his son are safe.
Superman confronts his imprisoned half-brother Tal-Rho to ask if there are any lingering effects to being possessed by the Kryptonian spirits through the eradication process. Tal denies this and offers to help Kal-El analyze the data in his Fortress of Solitude to learn more, pointing out that Steel effectively rendered him powerless, but Superman firmly refuses. Shortly thereafter, Superman attempts to stop a terrorist attack at an airport only for his enemy to take advantage of his new bouts of mental overload and knock him out as the military’s genetically enhanced Supermen step in and save the day.
At work, Lois has her journalistic integrity questioned by her colleague Chrissy Beppo when the veracity of a past article she wrote involving a cult linked to her family faces a heightened round of scrutiny. The two approach a local mine where the massive earthquake from the premiere originated from, but they are stonewalled by the head of the mining operation who shuts down any suspicions of malfeasance. Undeterred, Lois has Chrissy locate a seismologist to learn more about the nature of the earthquake itself. Superman separately learns from Lieutenant General Anderson that the military is tacitly linked to the mining operation, as he warns the Man of Steel to keep his distance because his new condition makes him a liability.
With Jordan frustrated by his girlfriend Sarah continuing to give him the cold shoulder, he volunteers to accompany his father and Tal to the Kryptonian criminal’s Fortress of Solitude when Superman reluctantly decides to take up his half-brother’s offer. Tal activates a crystal that summons a hologram of Kal and Tal’s mother Lara-El, who is displeased that her sons are at odds and that Tal attempted to use the Eradicator technology to subjugate humanity. While Superman is incapacitated by a mysterious subterranean creature bursting free, Tal reveals his powers are indeed still active but Jordan and Superman take down the rogue Kryptonian together.
Daniel Hart announces he is dropping out the Smallville mayoral race to take a new job outside of the county, much to Lana and Kyle Cushing’s visible shock, before the couple decides Lana should run for mayor instead. Meanwhile, Lois admits to Chrissy that her anonymous source in the cult article was her sister Lucy Lane, and Lucy was nearly killed by her involvement with the cult. Back at home, Sarah confesses to Jordan that she kissed one of her friends at summer camp, news that Jordan does not take well. Privately, Henry deduces that the earthquakes are linked to Superman’s condition while the the head of the mining operation confides to an unknown source that they are pleased with how powerful the underground monster is revealing itself to be.
Developed for television by Greg Berlanti and Todd Helbing, Superman & Lois airs Tuesdays at 8pm ET/PT on The CW.
