Supermans Next Fight is Taking Him Underground

Superman has rescued countless people and fought battles just about everywhere over the course of his superhero career, from under the sea to the edges of outer space. But the preview for Superman: Man of Tomorrow #9 shows that the Man of Steel’s next adventure will him someplace new – underground.

The issue, titled “What Lives Inside,” brings Superman and Lois Lane to a cavern called the Garnet Mine, where miners dig for precious gemstones. Lois says she covered a story about the mine last year, so the miners already had her contact information. Since everyone on the planet knows Lois has a direct line to Superman, when disaster struck at the mine, the miners knew just who to call to get the Man of Steel’s attention. But this wasn’t just a simple case of some miners being trapped underground. “These…things in the tunnels attacked him and the other gem miners,” a miner named Toni tells Lois. “We think they took some of the crew!”

When Superman arrives at the scene, he tries to use his X-Ray vision to see into the mine, only to discover that the rocks are full of lead sulfide – the one substance Superman can’t see through. He tells Lois to stay outside, but Lois has never been one to shy away from danger – or a good story – so the two head into the cavern to investigate. It doesn’t take long for them to come across the creatures that took the miners.

Not much has been revealed about these creatures as of yet, but whatever they are, they’re strong enough to at least bother Superman – which is no small feat – and there seems to be quite a few of them. Based on the artwork, the creatures appear to be made of some kind of rock, but can also melt and morph, as seen when they wrap themselves around Superman. The creatures don’t speak, but Superman says the noises they emit sound like cries of pain.

Given that Superman can hear muffled, pained sounds coming from the creatures, it seems likely that these monsters are, in fact, the miners covered in some kind of parasite, almost like the symbiote from Marvel’s Venom. This would also explain how they can seemingly stretch and take on different shapes. The difference is that here, it seems the miners have no control over their bodies once the parasite takes over. The question now arises – what happens if one of these parasites gets ahold of Superman?
