Supernatural 10 Times Dean Winchester Was The True Villain Of The Series

There were many villains in the long run of Supernatural, which saw the Winchesters end up going up against God himself. However, a lot of their issues were their own doing, with Dean being responsible for a majority of them, to the point where he can be considered the villain of the series.

That’s because a lot of his actions led to things getting worse and many people losing their lives. Other times, he treated the other heroes even worse than a villain would, thus breaking their spirits and preventing them from fighting the good fight and giving the advantage back to the bad guys.

10 His Attempts To Get Jack To Explode

Due to the reception surrounding the series finale, it can be forgotten that Dean had become a full-blown villain just a couple of episodes prior. After finding out that Jack could become a bomb to kill Chuck, Dean took it upon himself to get all the things necessary for the spell.

Despite meeting opposition from Sam and Castiel, Dean was hell-bent on blowing Jack up for his own selfish need to kill Chuck. This got to the point where he was willing to shoot Sam as well, only backing down when he found out the plan wouldn’t work. Had Dean not pressured Jack into going through with the plan, none of this would have happened.

9 Making The Deal For Sam’s Soul

Although it seemed noble at the time, Dean trading his soul to resurrect Sam was one of the worst decisions ever. That’s because it led to him going to Hell, which then got him to torture people there himself and breaking the first seal to Lucifer’s cage.

This means the entire apocalypse scenario was Dean’s fault, seeing as it traces all the way back to him trading his soul. Had he let Sam remain deceased — he was in Heaven anyway — then none of the thousands of people that died due to the apocalypse would have perished. Pretty much every bad thing that happened after Season 3 is Dean’s doing.

8 His Antagonism Of Sam Over Demon Blood

Supernatural 10 Times Dean Winchester Was The True Villain Of The Series

It was natural of Sam to assume he could do good once he found out he could beat demons even stronger than Castiel. Although he was warned against it, Sam didn’t follow through because nobody gave him a good reason, least of all Dean.

Dean instead claimed he would have killed Sam had they not been brothers, along with physically assaulting him out of anger and suggesting he use the demon-killing knife despite knowing it also killed the host body. Dean was also responsible for Sam ultimately killing Lilith, as he called Sam a monster, who became consumed with rage and went along with the plan once Dean abandoned him.

7 Allowing Gadreel To Possess Sam Without His Consent

After Sam had again been about to die in Season 9, Dean agreed to a partnership with the angel Ezekiel, telling him to possess Sam to heal his body and manipulate him by getting his consent by pretending to be Dean in his conscience.

It turned out Ezekiel was dead and Gadreel was posing as him, eventually possessing Sam to kill Kevin, thus handing Metatron the Word of God tablet and causing Sam to be Kevin’s killer. All this because Dean again couldn’t leave his selfish love alone.

6 Refusing To Be Helped With The Mark Of Cain

Despite knowing that taking the Mark of Cain would turn him bloodthirsty, Dean still went through with it. When it ultimately did turn him insane with bloodlust, Dean made things worse by refusing help from Sam and Castiel, going on a murderous rampage against the Styne family.

Sam and Castiel tried numerous times to help Dean contain himself but the latter’s refusal to comply meant he became an even worse killer. Dean then ended up killing Death itself, which meant the only being that could have fought the Darkness at the time was gone because of Dean taking the Mark of Cain up in the first place.

5 Cutting Ties With Castiel

Some of the fanbase defected from Destiel to the Sasstiel ship due to how Dean treated Castiel. Despite Castiel not being directly involved in Mary’s death, Dean blamed him purely because Castiel didn’t tell him about Jack’s soulless state.

He then did even worse by cutting ties with Castiel entirely after Jack’s death, meaning Castiel was all alone and without his surrogate son with nobody to console him over this loss. No antagonist had ever hurt Castiel to the extent that Dean had at that moment and he departed to be in solitude for months.

4 Throwing Castiel Out Of The Bunker

This is another instance that is far from the favorite of Destiel fans. The entire Gadreel fiasco wouldn’t have happened had Dean not kicked Castiel out of the Men of Letters headquarters. Despite Castiel having become human — meaning he could die of starvation and had no powers — Dean flatly told him he couldn’t stay while hiding the fact that “Ezekiel” had commanded him to.

Gadreel had done so knowing that Castiel would out him as a fraud and made Dean kick Castiel out under a false pretense. However, Dean didn’t care about his friendship with Castiel in the slightest and booted him, thereby setting up Kevin’s death as Castiel wasn’t there to point out Gadreel’s truth.

3 Making Sam Stop The Spell To Close The Gates Of Hell

Supernatural 10 Times Dean Winchester Was The True Villain Of The Series

By the end of Season 8, the Winchesters had found three trials to close the gates of Hell. When Sam was just about to finish the last one, Dean stopped him after he found out Sam would die. Sam was well aware and had no issue, but Dean talked him out of it once again due to his selfish love for Sam.

This was a villainous move due to Dean knowing that not closing the gates of Hell would mean that demons would continue to possess and kill innocent victims. He could have saved every human on Earth this way but chose his brother rather than thousands of lives.

2 His Plan To Trap And Kill Jack

Supernatural 10 Times Dean Winchester Was The True Villain Of The Series

In what turned out to an extremely hated storyline, Dean became consumed with vengeance when he found out the soulless Jack had killed Mary. Despite having once pardoned all of soulless Sam’s many atrocious acts, Dean overlooked this fact and became obsessed with killing Jack.

He then forced Sam to manipulate Jack into entering the Ma’lak box, with the hope of sealing him in there forever. While Sam showed remorse, Dean was delighted and then agreed to kill Jack when Chuck provided him with the gun to do so. Jack had lost his soul to protect Dean from Michael, but he didn’t care about any of this.

1 His Plan To Kill Amara

This is easily the most dastardly move Dean pulled, as he took advantage of the naive Amara in order to lure her to the bunker and kill her. Dean outright lied to Amara that he would never hurt her when in reality he had already made up his mind of ending her existence.

Amara was not only completely innocent but had been helping Dean to capture Chuck. What’s worse is that Chuck then used Dean’s truth to shatter Amara’s spirit, thus allowing him to absorb his sister’s essence and become even more powerful than before. When he snapped everyone in the world away, Chuck did so due to the power he received out of Dean’s manipulation of Amara.
