Castiel is probably one of the strongest characters on Supernatural, and yet there are still some angels out there who are even stronger.

We got awesome new kind of beings in angels in Season 4 of Supernatural a decade ago, who had been introduced as supremely powerful with very few weaknesses. Over time, the angels’ power levels have been severely diminished, including Castiel’s. Going up against each other has been more of an exciting contest, though, and fans have wondered exactly which angels Castiel might be able to beat.
For this reason, we’ve put together certain angels with whom Castiel either had minimal hostile interaction or a dubious fighting scenario, and judged how he would fare in a match-up against them. That said, here are five angels Castiel is stronger than, and five who outpower him.
10 Weaker: Gadreel
The one responsible for killing off Kevin, Gadreel held a special role in Heaven as the guard of the Garden of Eden. However, this didn’t mean he was anything special in terms of powers or ability.
In fact, Gadreel’s status as being something of a chump meant that Castiel didn’t even give him the time of day until the former got in cahoots with Metatron. Since Gadreel was stuck in prison for centuries while Castiel collected experience in that time, the latter would have the upper hand.
9 Stronger: Zachariah
Out of all the angels we’ve seen so far, Zachariah has been the one to have the most imagination where his powers are concerned. He never resorted to using his fists, instead relying on his inherent powers to cripple his enemies.
Castiel was always working under Zachariah, and considering the former relied on angel blades to fight, he wouldn’t be prepared for Zachariah’s arsenal of powers, which included breaking bones with a flick of his finger and even causing fourth stage cancer.
8 Weaker: Balthazar
In a sassing contest, Balthazar would easily win against anyone, but he was always something of anti-angel, meaning Balthazar didn’t rely on fighting skills or powers to get the job done. In fact, it was Castiel himself who killed Balthazar in the Season 6 finale due to his quick thinking.
Even disregarding that, Balthazar still wouldn’t have a shot at killing Castiel, since he was a normal angel who took plenty of God’s weapons to keep danger at bay and inherently didn’t have any extraordinary powers.
7 Stronger: Anna Milton
Anna was Castiel’s superior before she had been cast on Earth to be reborn as a human being. During this time, it was made clear that she was far more experienced than Castiel, perhaps even having a rank around Zachariah’s.
Considering she killed Uriel, had powers like dream-walking and time travel, Anna’s powers were on another level. It took the archangel Michael to take her out personally, meaning Castiel just wasn’t a match for her.
6 Weaker: Cupid
We’re going to be considering all kinds of cupids for this point, as this species of angels all have pretty much the same attributes. To be more specific, though, we can consider the first cupid explicitly called out to be one on the show.
While this guy had an exterior so sturdy that Dean seemed to break his hand by punching him, cupids on the whole just aren’t fighters, and should the need for combat arise they are completely hopeless. Comparing a Seraph like Castiel to a cupid is like arguing a child could fight an adult.
5 Stronger: Jane
In case you don’t remember her, Jane was a Nephilim, being the daughter of a human and an angel. Which places her among the class of angels in general. The only time we saw this poor girl was when Castiel killed her on Metatron’s orders, but it was by no means an easy task.
Even in a straight-up fight, Jane would always win since a Nephilim is stronger than the angel that gave birth to her, meaning Jane was more powerful than your average angel or Seraph, thereby exceeding Castiel’s power level.
4 Weaker: Anael
The talent of Anael has been that she’s made herself out to be a much bigger deal than she actually is, and people overestimate her worth. In actuality, Anael is such a weak angel that she’s been seen fearing normal humans in Sam and Dean.
Castiel isn’t one to pull his punches, and going up against Anael would be a simple task if you take out any trickery on her part. Even if he was the original average angel from his Season 4 days, Castiel would make short work of Anael.
3 Stronger: Naomi
Naomi comes under the class of Intelligence angels, which are the species that keep a step back and focus on their opponent’s weaknesses rather than fight them head-on. Naomi already proved she’s stronger than Castiel here, as she was able to tap into his mind.
Sure, you might say this doesn’t qualify as a fight, but based on the fact that she could mind control him, it makes the argument of a fight meaningless. Her ability to make him forget where he was or what he was doing meant Naomi had Castiel in the palm of her hand.
2 Weaker: Metatron
He’s been treated as one of the jokes of the series, and we’ll have to agree on that as Metatron was mostly bark and the occasional bite. While he had the powers of a God because of the angel tablet, the base level Metatron was a wimp.
He didn’t attack Castiel head-on in Season 8 because he knew he’d be outmatched, and instead relied on outsmarting him. Whenever a fair fight was on the horizon, Metatron would become the coward he was, and he didn’t posses any real inherent powers to challenge Castiel.
1 Stronger: Castiel (Alternate)
There have been multiple versions of Castiel on the show by now, but we’re considering the one we saw in Season 14’s “Lebanon” here, where the alternate timeline Castiel attacked Sam and Dean. Fans have debated if the real timeline Castiel could have matched him, and the answer is no.
That would be because this Castiel retained his angelic wings, thereby allowing him to teleport at will. Also, he had the ruthless streak the normal Castiel lacked, as the alternate one would have killed Sam and Dean had the timeline not reset. It’s a good thing they didn’t meet, as the alternate timeline Castiel would’ve killed the real one easy.
