In Supernatural, the characters somehow had time to hook up even with demons, God, and the Devil on their tails. Here are some beloved/hated couples.

Supernatural 5 Couples Everyone Loved (& 5 That Were Just Annoying)

With Supernatural finally working itself up towards a series finale, it is time to revisit the show that has gone on to become one of the longest-running in television history.

Through the years, we have laughed and cried with the two brothers as they have fought monsters against all odds and carried on with the family business, making the world a safer place. Of course, it didn’t hurt that they were particularly easy on the eyes and constantly sacrificed their shots at love and life for the bigger picture. After all, what better way to make instant martyrs out of two brave, handsome young men!

Across the seasons the show has given us a veritable medley of characters–adorable, pathetic and forgettable. The Winchester brothers and their allies have had their share of romantic entanglements, but given the nature of the show, they have almost always ended in heartbreaks. Here are a few couples (or could-have-been-couples) on Supernatural that we loved.

10 Loved: Dean and Jo

Jo was the daughter of Ellen Harvelle, an ally of John Winchester, and a hunter in the making. She developed feelings for Dean quite as soon as they met, but it seemed clear from the beginning that while Jo was infatuated by Dean, he did not necessarily see her as much more than a sister. He was fond of her but decided to take it no further given the kind of life he led.

Yet, the Rambo-esque Dean and the fragile-looking girl-next-door turned badass hunter Jo would surely have made for an adorable couple if the kiss that Dean planted on her moments before she was blown into smithereens was any indication.

9 Annoyed: Sam and Ruby

God knows Padalecki (Sam) and Cortese (Ruby) are married now and look adorable together! But on the show, Sam and Ruby’s complex relationship came at a difficult time and ultimately led to very serious consequences.

It was Ruby who trained Sam to drink demon blood in order to control his powers and Ruby who lured him into a trap that finally unleashed Lucifer upon the world. Moreover, what Sam and Ruby had wasn’t really romantic, but more of a trade, as we found out gradually.

8 Loved: Sam and Madison

Supernatural 5 Couples Everyone Loved (& 5 That Were Just Annoying)

Madison appeared in the second season of Supernatural in the episode “Heart.” After Jessica’s tragic death, Sam had gone around brooding until he met Madison and there was an instant attraction between the two. But as luck would have it, she turned out to be a werewolf and after a single night during which the brothers hoped that she might have been cured, well, it was clear that she wasn’t, nor was she likely to.

In what still stands as one of the most heart-wrenching scenes in the entire series, Dean sheds a single tear as Sam forces himself to shoot Madison in the background, “the first woman since Jessica he ever loved” (as mentioned in season 4, “The Monster at the End of this Book”). Needless to say, we cried for him too.

7 Annoyed: Mary and Ketch

This one was just awkward! The brothers’ dead mother was resurrected by Darkness and although we never quite got to see her together with John, we did imagine them happy and very much in love. And although John is long gone when Mary returns and she has every right to consent to a relationship with whoever she wishes, her choice of Arthur Ketch seems forced.

Perhaps this little affair provided an arc to Ketch’s otherwise Terminator-ish storyline but was quite unnecessary.

6 Loved: Dean and Lisa

Lisa Braeden is probably one of the longest relationships Dean has had since we got on board the story of the Winchesters. Lisa is first shown to be a past one-night stand of Dean’s and he, in turn, had apparently been “the best night of her life”. Dean shows up unannounced at Lisa’s door and ends up developing a beautiful bond with her eight-year-old boy.

It is also Lisa who takes him in as Dean is left devastated after Sam’s apparent death in the season 5 finale. Later on, Dean requests Castiel to erase both Lisa and Ben’s memories of him for good, to keep them safe. Lisa is Dean’s safe place, his idea of an “apple pie life” and we loved her for it.

5 Annoyed: Sam and Becky

Remember the obsessive Becky who was Chuck the prophet’s number one fan? Well, in season 7, she uses a love potion on Sam and marries him, much to Dean’s and the audience’s concern!

Of course, this is not a real couple but we do get a glimpse of how the Winchesters ending up in the wrong arms would look like. The marriage is annulled by the end of the episode much to our relief but that doesn’t stop it from being extremely annoying.

4 Loved: Castiel and Meg

Supernatural 5 Couples Everyone Loved (& 5 That Were Just Annoying)

The ever socially awkward Castiel and the demon-turned-ally-of-sorts Meg flirted, kissed and seemed to have a strange yet altogether not too bad thing going. The fact that one was an angel and the other a demon made their connection curious, but somehow more unique.

In fact, Meg’s candor was the perfect antidote to Castiel’s prim countenance and might have been an interesting arc in itself. However, like the Winchesters, Castiel is also doomed in love.

3 Annoyed: Sam and Amelia

Supernatural 5 Couples Everyone Loved (& 5 That Were Just Annoying)

When Dean ends up in Purgatory after the season 7 finale, “Survival of the Fittest”, Sam goes on to lead a strange life where he meets Amelia, whose husband is presumed dead.

Almost the entire storyline of Amelia is shown through flashbacks and memories and she never quite develops as a character, let alone her romance with Sam. Moreover, Sam does not seem to have made any efforts to look for his brother, which does not fit the canonical profile of the brothers who would rather lay down their lives than see the other one perish.

2 Loved: Sam and Sarah

Supernatural 5 Couples Everyone Loved (& 5 That Were Just Annoying)

Early on in the series, we meet Sarah Blake, the daughter of an art dealer who sells a haunted painting that gets people killed. Sarah and Sam were natural together and the sparks, however brief, were too obvious to go unnoticed, even by Dean. However, as usual, this too did not work out as Sam was still mourning Jessica at the time and was certain that whoever he loved would end up dead.

Tragically, Sarah does die later on from a witch’s spell. She was one of the few who would have made quite the perfect couple with Sam.

1 Annoyed: Rowena and Ketch

Two of the Winchester brothers’ foes-turned-allies were shown to be briefly attracted to each other in the ongoing season before both of them were bumped off, although one turned up in hell later. While we have nothing against the witch and the mercenary hunter individually, seeing them eyeing each other lustily was simply rather annoying and not romantic at all.

It seems as if the makers made a desperate bid to throw together a few couples in the final season just to see if they would have ever made sense.
