After two unsuccessful attempts, a Supernatural spinoff has finally gained a series order at The CW, as well as a prequel to the network’s Walker series.

Per Variety, the previously announced pilots for The Winchesters and Walker: Independence have both manifested series orders. The Winchesters, a prequel to Supernatural, follows the Winchester brothers’ parents and their “epic, untold love story” before Sam and Dean were born. Walker: Independence, similar in nature to Paramount+’s Yellowstone prequel 1883, is set during the 19th century.

The CW ordered a pilot for The Winchesters in February. Supernatural co-lead Jensen Ackles is set to reprise his role as Dean, who will serve as the prequel series’ narrator. Ackles will also executive produce the series along with his wife, Danneel, under their Chaos Machine Productions company. The Winchesters cast its Mary and John Winchester, Meg Donnelly (American Housewife, Zombies) and Drake Rodger (Murder RX, The In Between), in March. Mary was previously portrayed by Samantha Smith and Amy Gumenick in Supernatural, while John was played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Matt Cohen at different points in the series.

The Winchesters is the first Supernatural spinoff to make it to series after The CW declined to order Supernatural: Bloodlines in 2013 and Wayward Sisters in 2018. Supernatural did, however, receive an anime adaptation of the series titled Supernatural: The Animation in 2011. Produced by Japanese anime studio Madhouse, the one-season series adapted the first two seasons of the live-action version.

Walker: Independence, meanwhile, is set in the 1800s and follows Abby Walker (Katherine McNamara), “a wealthy Bostonian whose husband is murdered on their journey west.” While seeking revenge for her husband’s death, Abby meets Hoyt Rawlins (Matt Barr), an aimless “lovable rogue”. The two settle in Independence, Texas, “a place where nothing is as it seems.” Like his Supernatural co-lead, Walker’s Jared Padalecki will flex his executive producing skills on the upcoming prequel.

The CW hasn’t yet made clear how Independence’s Abby Walker is related to the present-day Walker family, Abeline (Molly Hagan), Cordell (Padalecki) and Liam (Keegan Allen). The old-timey Hoyt Rawlins’ relation to Cordell’s best friend of the same name, also played by Barr in Walker, is unclear as well.

All 15 seasons of Supernatural are currently available to stream on Netflix, while fans can catch Walker episodes via The CW’s website or mobile app.
