Supernatural Season 15 Episode 10 Mocks… Supernatural
Supernatural is currently airing its 15th and final season, and took this week’s episode to poke fun at its own expense in hilarious fashion.

In a hilariously self-referential episode, Supernatural took one last opportunity to poke fun at itself before the show comes to an end. From one-line gags admitting the Leviathans weren’t great villains to an episode where Dean and Sam Winchester played Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, Supernatural has never shied away from making jokes at its own expense, and there are a number of famously meta episodes scattered throughout Supernatural’s history. With the current season 15 being the show’s last, Supernatural recently took the time to mock its own tropes, quirks and inconsistencies – and it was certainly a treat for longtime fans.
As “The Heroes’ Journey” begins, Sam and Dean are still coming to terms with the latest chapter in their ongoing battle against God. The brothers had already found out that their entire lives had been nothing more than a story for the Lord Almighty’s entertainment, but now Chuck was planning to have the Winchesters kill each other for a poetic and tragic ending before he moved on to another world. Since God is behind the Winchester tale, the brothers’ protagonist privileges have apparently now been revoked by the author, meaning Sam and Dean now have to contend with problems TV heroes usually get to avoid. Here are all the gags you may have missed in Supernatural season 15, episode 10.
- What do Sam and Dean live on when they don’t have proper jobs? The answer has always been bogus credit cards, but those are now being declined.
- Garth has named his twin boys Sam and…Castiel. Dean gets left out.
- The audience sees what happens when Sam and Dean lose their innate heroism…Dean has to get dental work done and Sam rolls around after drinking some nasty cayenne pepper concoction.
- There’s a weird dream sequence with Dean and Garth doing a tap dance – perhaps calling back to previous trippy episodes, usually facilitated by Gabriel as The Trickster.
- Garth realizes he’s just a guest star…but is quite pleased about that.
- When Sam questions a beaten up werewolf, the victim asks if the younger brother’s puppy dog eyes and furrowed brow ever really works. The Winchesters share a knowing look, acknowledging that the tactic is well-used.
- Garth and his wife claim to be massive fans of 50 Shades of Grey. Sam asks who the hero in that story is.
- Garth also reveals why viewers rarely see Sam and Dean doing regular-guy stuff – “the hero never sweats the small stuff, it slows down the story.“
- Ever thought the villains give too much plot exposition away? So does Dean. When he asks the werewolf where the bad guys are, he answers straight away, much to Dean’s surprise.
- Dean is surprised someone would fight monsters for money…then realizes the irony.
- Dean’s beloved grenade launcher returns. This was a running joke since the pilot episode, finally paying off in season 12.
- Given Dean’s heavy fast food diet, it’s a wonder he never suffers from digestion problems. Heroes obviously don’t have to deal with these issues, but Dean isn’t a protagonist anymore, and he promptly has to throw up right in the middle of a mission.
- Dean mocks Maul for having such a ridiculous bad guy name.
- One of the fighters is called Jamaica Djinn. Not an in-joke, but a very clever play on the Daphne du Maurier novel.
- Lock-picking is something Supernatural takes for granted to help move along the plot. Suddenly, Sam and Dean realize they can’t do it anymore.
- Thee entire final fight with a massive vampire brilliantly shows what real humans would be like in that scenario. Dean gets hoofed in the crotch, and neither Winchester can land a single punch.
“The Heroes’ Journey” may not have done much to advance the main story of Supernatural season 15, but it was certainly a treat for veteran fans who are familiar with all the tropes being parodied. Supernatural has always had the ability to not take itself too seriously, and that quality was in full effect here. Aside from the gags and callbacks, it also would’ve pleased many to see Garth get a strong showing and a big final moment before Supernatural comes to an end. The hunter/werewolf has been one of the most underused of the series, but his comic genius shone through in this week’s luckless adventure.
