Supernatural monster hunters Sam and Dean Winchester came very close to facing off with Friday the 13th’s hulking slasher Jason Voorhees. The potential crossing of the two franchises actually doesn’t seem too out there, when one considers that Supernatural has produced some extremely off the wall episodes over the years, and that Jason had already headed to Elm Street and battled Freddy Krueger years before. It’s hard to imagine a conclusive victor though, as it’s Sam and Dean’s show, and Jason never truly stays down for the count.

Had a Supernatural and Friday the 13th crossover episode actually occurred, it also would’ve, surprisingly, marked the first and only instance of Sam and Dean encountering an actual horror movie villain that wasn’t created for the show or lifted from the public domain. For the sake of continuity, not to mention licensing fees, it’s understandable why producers never chose to go that route, but it sure would’ve been cool to see the Winchesters encounter Pinhead during a trip to Hell, or Pennywise during a stop in Maine.

The idea of inserting Jason Voorhees into the Supernatural world wasn’t just some wacky idea throw around at a script meeting either. At one point, everyone involved thought Jason’s inclusion in season 3 was a done deal. Sadly, things fell through.

In “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” the tenth episode of Supernatural season 3, Sam and Dean Winchester head into the dreamscape in order to rescue their surrogate father figure Bobby Singer from a comatose state. While there they encounter various upsetting things, including some of Bobby’s worst memories revisited. This episode was originally planned to include an appearance by Jason Voorhees, who would’ve attacked Dean in the dream realm as part of a sequence designed as a tribute to the Friday the 13th franchise. This wouldn’t have just been a thinly veiled homage either, the intent was to have it be Jason specifically, or at least an imagined version.

As with so many scrapped ideas in Hollywood, the reason Jason didn’t show up on Supernatural came down to legal issues. Considering that Warner Bros. had the rights to make Jason movies at the time, and Supernatural is a Warner Bros. show, it would seem they would be in the clear. Supernatural creator Eric Kripke certainly thought they were, but mere days before production was to begin, he was told Jason had to be removed from the script due to some kind of unexpected rights snafu. Considering the tangled web that Friday the 13th’s rights have become in recent years, it’s quite possible that while Supernatural had Warner Bros.’ permission to use Jason, they failed to gain the permission of other parties involved.

The main Jason rights have always been controlled by producer Sean S. Cunningham, at least up until the recent contentious rights lawsuit by original writer Victor Miller. Also, while WB had the rights to make new Jason films back in 2008, Paramount still retained the rights to the Friday the 13th name and other elements of the movies they produced and distributed in the 1980s. With that said, it’s possible Supernatural’s producing team neglected to get the needed all clear from both Cunningham and Paramount before proceeding. Funnily enough though, Supernatural star Jared Padalecki would indeed meet Jason the next year, starring in the 2009 Friday the 13th remake that was co-produced by Warner Bros. and Paramount.
