Supernatural Star Confirms Castiel Is Gay

Supernatural star confirms that Castiel is gay. From creator Eric Kripke (The Boys), Supernatural premiered on The CW in 2005, back when the network was still known as The WB. Since then, the horror drama starring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles as the monster-hunting brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, has cemented itself as a genre cult favorite and one of the longest-running dramas on television.

In the 4th season of Supernatural, the angel known as Castiel, played by Misha Collins, joined the cast. Castiel was stoic, dutiful, and determined, although a bit naive when it came to human nature. Castiel would grow very close to the Winchesters over the next few years, becoming almost like the 3rd brother. Now, in Supernatural’s final season, writers have been tying up many loose ends, bringing closure to characters’ storylines, and answering remaining questions, including the true nature of Castiel’s affection for one of the Winchesters in particular.

In the latest episode of Supernatural, Castiel finally openly declares his love for Dean, but the scene left viewers unsure if it was platonic or something more. Now, Collins confirms Castiel’s feelings were romantic. Fans have long shipped Dean and Castiel as “Destiel,” mostly based on innuendo between the two. Speaking to a crowd of fans at the DarkLight Online Convention (via PopBuzz.com), Collins acknowledges that romantic feelings were there for Castiel.

“Castiel tells Dean he loves him and basically makes Destiel canon. Fans are freaking out after that. To complicate matters, he dies after that. So Castiel makes his homosexual declaration of love and then dies, which plays into a timeless Hollywood trope of ‘Kill the gays.’ We give, and then we take away.”

Since Castiel’s introduction, there have been hints and nods to Castiel’s deeper feelings for Dean. Season 4, Episode 8, Byzantium, saw Castiel make a deal with a cosmic force known as “The Empty” to spare the soul of Castiel’s adopted son, Jack, in exchange for his own. The Empty declares that it would make good on the trade for Castiel’s soul only upon the moment the angel found his true happiness. With Castiel finally relieving himself the burden of suppressed emotions and admitting his feelings to Dean, he discovered true happiness and, in doing so, also summoned The Empty to collect on his debt, effectively killing Castiel.

Fans have had mixed reactions to this ultimate revelation between Castiel and Dean. Despite being open and affectionate, some fans felt Castiel has always skewed heterosexual, like in season 9, episode 3, I’m No Angel, where he has sex with the female reaper, April, for the first time. Yet others felt that with Castiel’s death, as Collins suggests, the show, unfortunately, closes the door on the potential relationship before it could ever be explored. However, fans shouldn’t give up all hope, as there are still two episodes remaining before the series finale of Supernatural. Castiel, Sam, and Dean have all cheated death on countless occasions, so there’s still time for resurrection and a possible “happy ever after” for Destiel.
