Even though Supernatural aired its final episode back in 2020, fans on Reddit are still debating about their favorite episodes from the long-running series. While many users agree that the trickster episodes are some of the best in the show because of their silly gags and inventive story-telling techniques, others would say that the series is at its best when it explores the relationship between the brothers and their emotional states.

The show has extensive legacies and many noteworthy plotlines and mid-season twists. However, according to Redditors, a few episodes stand out as some of the best of the series.

Faith

The first season of Supernatural was special in that it emphasized more of the dark themes of the series and “Faith” does just that. Along with many other Redditors, Therealgoobyyoobydoo claims that this episode is spectacular since “you can see Sam and Dean’s bond clearly for the first time.”

This episode shows how much Sam loves Dean and it also proposes a fairly ethical question when it comes to human life because when one person is healed in this story, someone else dies. This story also introduces a very important element to the show, which is the use and abuse of religion. Overall, this episode is one of the best coming out of season 1.

Tall Tales

“Tall Tales” is one of the first episodes in the series to break away from some of the more serious melodrama with a fun-loving monster of the week. Redditor GarlicknottodaySatan says that “‘Tall Tales,’ ‘Mystery Spot’ and ‘Changing Channels’ are all very funny episodes.” There’s no doubt on Reddit that everyone loves the Trickster or, rather, Archangel Gabriel, even though he got progressively worse and worse as the show continued.

“Tall Tales” introduces this character, played by Richard Speight Jr., as a raunchy, sweet-toothed demi-god who loves to play games with the Winchester boys. This episode brings some much-needed levity to season 2 since it does end on such a dark note. While it doesn’t get super inventive, it lets audiences know that anything can happen in this show.

Mystery Spot

“Mystery Spot” is another classic episode that ties in all the important themes of the series. RelentlesslyDocile says “I love all the meta episodes and anything with the Trixster [sic].” Many other Reddit users agree that the season 3 episode is one of the best of Supernatural.

“Mystery Spot” not only features the Trickster and some fun gags, but it also shows just how far Sam will go to bring his brother back to him. This entire episode is a classic Groundhog Day situation. At its core, however, “Mystery Spot” is really just a character study of Sam and how he deals with the loss of his loving, but tough brother, Dean.

Lazarus Rising

“Lazarus Rising” is a monumental season 4 episode in Supernatural since it begins with Dean rising from the dead after being saved by Castiel and it introduces angels into the series. Animalion states that “it really just tilted everything about the show on its head.”

This episode elevates the stakes of the series and shows the audience just how important Sam and Dean are to their world and the supernatural beings within it. Not to mention, “Lazarus Rising” brings in this idea of the Winchesters’ destiny as hunters and brothers. It’s no surprise that this season premiere is one of the strongest in Supernatural’s history.

On The Head Of A Pin

“On the Head of a Pin” embraces the dark side of Dean that developed after his time in Hell. FlayedMan345 writes, “[It’s] dark and powerful for both brothers at that point in time and [it’s] a critical episode for Castiel.”

Season 4, because of Dean’s experience in Hell as well as Sam’s indulging in demon blood, is notably a season with some pretty dark themes. Sam and Dean get a good glimpse at just how much the evil around them has shaped them.

Changing Channels

This episode from season 5 not only pokes fun at other kinds of cable TV shows, but it also is the episode that reveals the Trickster to be the Archangel Gabriel, who has a much bigger stake in the impending apocalypse. While Gabriel gets to play his little games in this episode, what makes it noteworthy is that it ends with him finally being put in a vulnerable position, which adds to the stakes of the overall season.

Swan Song

Many Reddit users agreed that “Swan Song” is one of the best episodes in all of Supernatural. This episode’s appeal is pretty self-explanatory. Not only did it mark the end of the Kripke era, which featured some unusual storylines, but it was also the show’s original ending. As ZSR319 writes, “I would say “Swan Song” [is my favorite]. For me, it had everything: drama, suspense, humor, and did everything so well.”

Weekend At Bobby’s

Bobby is a curmudgeonly older hunter who has vast experience in all things that go bump in the night, and this episode brings to light how much he does for the boys, as well as other hunters. While this episode has some comedy, what really makes it work is Bobby’s willingness to help others, even when he gets nothing in return. Many fans would say Bobby’s character left Supernatural too soon, even though he was a series regular for seven seasons.

Scoobynatural

This season 13 episode is by far one of the most ambitious Supernatural ever aired. UliferAteMyCat says that “Scoobynatural” “was always a gem in my opinion.”

This episode uses a mix of live-action and animation to bring to life a crossover episode with Scooby-Doo that was unexpectedly funny and just a little bit scary. While nothing revolutionary happens in this story, the running gags and monster of the week make this episode refreshing, which is a tall order for a show with hundreds of episodes.
