Survivor 41 Why The Yase Tribes Dysfunction Is Good For The Show

The Yase tribe on Survivor 41 has been off to a rocky start, and it’s a good sign for the show that the tribal dynamics at play in the early stages have been anything but conventional. Yase is one of the three tribes competing on the new season of Survivor. The tribe originally consisted of Xander Hastings, David Voce, Liana Wallace, Tiffany Seely, Eric Abraham, and Evvie Jagoda, but two members have already been voted out of the game, leaving four players competing against the complete Luvu tribe and the five-member Ua tribe.

Yase has struggled in the immunity challenges so far, and the castaways have been forced to eliminate members of their own tribe. The first person voted off was Eric, who struggled to ingratiate himself with the tribe despite his physical contributions. David was voted out next in an unconventional move by the faction of Evvie, Liana, and Tiffany, who also considered targeting Xander because of his possession of an extra vote and the new Beware Advantage.

The Yase tribe’s dysfunction in the early portion of the game has led to entertaining television and confounding gameplay. Even though they have lost every challenge thus far, the tribe elected to vote out David, a strong challenge performer, over Tiffany, whose difficulties in the balance portion of the most recent challenge cost the team the win. Back at camp, Tiffany’s paranoia led to frantic strategizing and conflict with her alliance partners, Liana and Evvie. In eliminating a seemingly strong competitor, the tribe might be setting themselves up for future failure, as well as riveting Survivor fodder.

There is a precedent for members of small, dysfunctional tribes to go on and have successful runs on the show. For instance, Survivor: Philippines featured the Matsing tribe’s complete breakdown, but two of its members, Denise Stapley and Malcolm Freberg, persevered to the end. Denise ultimately won the season. Likewise, Survivor: Cagayan’s infamously dysfunctional “Brains” tribe, Luzon, had three of its members make deep runs and be invited back for a Second Chance all-star season.

If Yase’s struggles continue, they’ll no doubt enter the pantheon of all-time dysfunctional tribes like Matsing and Luzon. With personalities clashing and strategies forming, there are sure to be fireworks should the tribe continue its losing streak. The alliance of Tiffany, Liana, and Evvie appears strong, but if they determine that Xander is a better choice to keep in the game, they could end up turning on one another.

How Yase fares in coming episodes depends on how well they perform in the challenges. Will David’s ousting cost them, or will they be able to avoid Tribal Council? It could be good for the season if they continue to fail, as the strategic dynamics that will occur when they’re forced to whittle down their numbers will undoubtedly make for compelling Survivor gameplay.
