Swamp Thing vs Poison Ivy Who Would Win In A Fight

DC has produced two plant-powered popular culture icons in Swamp Thing and Poison Ivy, both of whom boast multiple live-action and animated adaptations. However, the photosynthetic anti-heroes share more than just an affinity with the environment: both characters are intimately connected with The Green, an elemental force permeating all plant life across the universe.

While both characters are able to make plants grow at rapid speeds and command tendrils to attack or restrain opponents, they differ in certain powers and methods. Where Swamp Thing (formerly scientist Alex Holland) is able to reshape his body and transport his consciousness across any plant matter in the universe, Ivy (alter ego of botanist Dr. Pamela Isley) secretes pheromones that can infatuate and control other people, and toxins that can kill through touch. But should the two ever come into conflict, who would emerge as DC’s most powerful plant-based character?

The answer to this question might depend on whether the battle takes place in isolation, or whether other super-powered individuals are present nearby. While Poison Ivy draws her powers from the mystical Green, Swamp Thing was chosen as its Avatar by the Parliament of Trees. This stronger connection to the same source of power gives Swamp Thing the upper hand in any fight against other Green-affiliated beings, while his plant physiology would render him entirely immune to Ivy’s mind-controlling pheromones. However, Ivy was able to take control over all life on Earth in the Everyone Loves Ivy story arc (from Tom King and Mikel Janín), rendering the planet’s entire population subservient to her will – including the likes of Superman and Wonder Woman. Not even Swamp Thing could stand against an Ivy-controlled army of the Justice League, Suicide Squad, and Legion of Doom!

Swamp Thing and Ivy have fought each other before, in Injustice: Year Three #21 (Brian Buccellato and Mike S. Miller), a prequel to the popular video game series. After a fight between Trigon and Mr. Mxyzptlk leads to a forest being set on fire, Swamp Thing arrives to subdue Batman and Superman’s warring factions. Ivy is unwillingly brought into the conflict by Dick Grayson (who has taken over Boston Brand’s role as Deadman), hoping that she would prove a worthy adversary to the Protector of the Green. Although the two immediately start fighting, they soon find common ground in their mutual concern for the surrounding forest fire, through which they form an immediate romantic connection. Perhaps Alec and Pamela end up forming an unstoppable eco-friendly power couple in some corners of the DC multiverse, though Swamp Thing’s love for Abby Arcane and Ivy’s love for Harley Quinn would make this romance unlikely in mainstream DC continuity.

Swamp Thing and Ivy were even shown to have mutual respect for each other in Poison Ivy: Cycle of Life and Death #6 (from Amy Chu, Al Barrionuevo, and Cliff Richards), when they teamed up to fight Grim, an evil plant-human hybrid. In the story’s conclusion, Swamp Thing’s parting words – “We are not alone. We, are… unique.” – leads Ivy to reconnect with Harley. Nevertheless, should their differing perspectives on humanity manifest in any physical conflict, the victor would likely depend on the available resources. However, it is very possible that neither Swamp Thing nor Poison Ivy could truly be defeated as long as plants are thriving somewhere on Earth.
