Sword Master is Marvels Worst Tomb Raider

Marvel may have its very own dysfunctional Lara Croft, Tomb Raider with Sword Master (aka Lin Lie). A resident of Shanghai, Lin Lie was living an otherwise normal life until his archaeologist father brought home a particularly fancy sword from a dig in the fictional Valley of a Thousand Tombs. Not long after, his father vanishes. As he goes on the hunt looking for him, Lin Lie discovers that the Chinese myths he grew up hearing are actually true, and that he is the descendant of a legendary Chinese emperor, Fu Xi. The sword his father left him is none other than Fu Xi’s own weapon, used to kill the god of war, Chiyou. Armed with this mysterious sword, Lin Lie must track down his father while also protecting the earth from demons.

Sword-Master is one of Marvel’s newest characters, having debuted in 2018 in Shuizhu and Gunji’s Warriors of the Three Sovereigns Vol. 1. He made a brief appearance in last year’s War of the Realms annual, and played a starring role in Greg Pak’s New Agents of Atlas series. The current Sword Master series from Shuizhu and Gunji was adapted by Pak, and features an additional storyline of his training under Shang-Chi in New York.

Sword Master brings a distinct, archaeological adventure flavor to the Marvel Universe while also introducing a new type of protagonist to the sub-genre. While characters like Lara Croft and Indiana Jones are unfailingly competent in the field, Lin Lie is the chaotic opposite. He barely knows anything about the sword, and struggles to wield it effectively against demons in his first few issues. Meanwhile, the sword itself is near-Mjolnir levels of powerful as it is capable of killing gods, flying around on its own, locating allies, and only responds to Lin Lie’s touch. In effect, Sword Master plays with the collisions between myth and reality, finding humor in the intersections of both.

Sword Master is a mess, and that makes him a great hero

Much like Lara Croft, Lin Lie grew up immersed in the world of archaeology. In his home, artifacts and copies of artifacts alike are strewn around casually. Because of his close relationship with his father and his work, Lin Lie’s archaeological knowledge gives him a special edge that most heroes do not have. Additionally, the events of his story are also thrown into action due to his father going missing, filling out the makings of an origin story very similar to Lara’s. Despite being a little erratic on the battlefield, Lin Lie’s special skill is solving complex puzzles. In his first issue, he tricked a group of grave-robbers by hiding a prized, two-thousand-year-old artifact inside a puzzle box he made himself. Later, while working with Shang-Chi and Ares, Lin Lie solved a puzzle that revealed a hidden room in a temple in Madripoor.

Like Tomb Raider games, Sword Master brings fresh life to ancient myths. but it also adds a fumbling, highly relatable hero with a lot to learn. With Sword Master #10 teasing the possibility of Lin Lie falling under the guidance of an elderly chief with a magical, ancestral weapon just like his, Sword Master’s future growth as a hero is dependent on the people he surrounds himself with. Hopefully as he progresses in his series, Sword Master will develop into a formidable artifact hunter just like Lara Croft.
